 PREFACE

This study although appearing to be comprehensive is really just a preface for you to expand and enlarge upon.

You will find that as you read the Word, the objects of this study will repeatedly occur throughout scripture and you will be able to identify how relevant they are to our daily activity.

The Amplified Bible was used almost exclusively throughout and the clarity this translation brings to many of the scriptures is most helpful in grasping the intention of the scribes. I found that the use of a dictionary, although at times aided to clarifying a word, the Strong’s Dictionary was generally helpful.

My intention in addressing this subject was not to provide some handbook, but to issue each of us a challenge to recognise the “Inconceivable Greatness” of our God, regardless of the surrounding issues. Hopefully as you read and study the subject you will also begin to understand Father’s unique and all-encompassing plan for our lives, individually and collectively, and be conformed into the original plan, that is, being made in His image and likeness.

One word that relates to this study is SELAH, so there is no need to be in a hurry to read, but always be in a hurry to implement the truths you glean.

I want to introduce this study by stating that all though Father uses circumstance to refine us, He does not leave us to our own devices but at all times is acting on our behalf in His ambition for us to eventually achieve Sonship. I hope to show that all the circumstances we face have an underlying purpose, and the task we face is being able to recognise that what is occurring has an eternal component, structured to restore us to the pattern of our original design, that of, “In His image and Likeness” (Romans 8:29) We have a need to see things not from an earthly perspective but to embrace the Word of God in relation to everything we face, and to get our ambitions correctly focused.

We can trust the Lord regardless of what transpires round about us because we know He is in complete control.

WORRY

Psalm 31:15                                        My times are in Your hands; deliver me from the hands of my foes and those who pursue me and persecute me.

So what are “TIMES”?

From H5703; time, especially (adverbially with preposition) now, when, etc.: –  + after, [al-] ways, X certain, + continually, + evening, long, (due) season, so [long] as, [even-, evening-, noon-] tide, ([meal-], what) time, when.

So we do not have to worry about the specific, past, future, periodical, perpetual, uncertain, sure, or any other period of time, THEY ARE ALL IN HIS HANDS.

1 John 2:17                                         And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever. (Does this sort of override what we would consider “time”?    …..comments mine)

We are not under the circumstances, we may/are/will be, faced with circumstances but we are above the circumstances when we have the proper perspectives. We often cannot change the circumstance, but can become better people because of them. There is a place of recognition that will change our whole lifestyle, and it is found in:-

Psalm 118:23                                     This is from the Lord AND IS HIS DOING; it is marvellous in our eyes

We are not contending with the devil for a place of victory; we overcome the devil from our position of victory. Circumstances, taken apart from consideration of the Scriptures and the peace of God, can lead us astray, that is why it is imperative we learn to look at things from Fathers perspective.

Jeremiah 29:11                                 For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.

James 1:2                                            CONSIDER IT WHOLLY JOYFUL, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.

Isaiah 55:8-9                                       For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are MY WAYS HIGHER THAN YOUR WAYS AND MY THOUGHTS THAN YOUR THOUGHTS.

With the above scriptures clearly in perspective we will see that circumstances therefore do not fall into the categories of “favourable” and “unfavourable” even though to our natural mind they might qualify for one or other. When the “circumstance” seems conducive to our benefit we are often happy to proceed, however when it seems “unconducive” then we quickly can become disenchanted with our lot in life. A life of contentment does not depend upon the “Providences of God” but on our “Perspective of God”.

I hear people say “I am having/have had a bad day”, this is rubbish, no matter what day it is “THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD HAS MADE, LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT”

Paul wrote to Timothy with a similar thought in mind:-

2 Timothy 4:2                                    Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], WHETHER THE OPPORTUNITY SEEMS TO BE FAVORABLE OR UNFAVORABLE. [WHETHER IT IS CONVENIENT OR INCONVENIENT, WHETHER IT IS WELCOME OR UNWELCOME, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching. (This little pesky word “PATIENCE” keeps popping up, see further down in study)

As we study this most relevant subject let us frequently    “SELAH”.   (just pause and think about this)

There is not one of us I believe who would not find that an easy road to heaven would be the pathway of choice, but that is what a lot of “Religions” offer. For instance, a Muslim who blows himself up or shoots “infidels” gets to go straight to heaven with the promise of some dozens of virgins to “meet and greet” on his arrival. Depending upon his method of departure, one is left to wonder what sort of condition he would be in to deal with all those virgins!!!!!

Even in the natural realm there has to be some guarantees regarding the quality of the goods we are buying, whether it be food or cars or houses, and whilst gold is a very precious commodity it is only recognised for its true value when it has been smelted and the impurities removed by submitting to the furnace. Why do I buy brand names rather than some cheap import? Unless we have the assurance of quality, not some pot luck chance of some virgins in heaven, then we are buying “a pig in a poke”.

And so, in light of the recent study on “CIRCUMSTANCES” I am pressed to review what is THE PURPOSE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCE. Our problem is that we don’t generally recognise that the circumstance is for our good, even if it would appear to be perverse, because we need to remember that “Nothing happens by accident” (Proverbs 16:33)

Acts 2:25                                              For David says in regard to Him, I saw the Lord constantly before me, for He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken or overthrown or cast down [from my secure and happy state]. (regardless of circumstance!!!)

Psalm 16:8-11                                    I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory [my inner self] rejoices; my body too shall rest and confidently dwell in safety, For You will not abandon me to Sheol (the place of the dead), neither will You suffer Your holy one [Holy One] to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy, at Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 62:2                                          He only is my Rock and my Salvation, my Defense and my Fortress, I shall not be greatly moved.

The important points here are that firstly David had the Lord in constant remembrance, an art I think we are on the way to realising, but secondly, the nearness that is inferred, “at the right hand”.

In the court system the advocate sits at the right-hand of the defendant, firstly because of the dignity and honour afforded that position but secondly, he acts as a protector for the defendant. This thought comes out of: –

Psalm 109:31                                     For He will stand at the right hand of the poor and needy, to save him from those who condemn his life.

The listing that follows is not necessarily comprehensive but is sufficiently all encompassing to reinforcing the premise that “EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE FITS INTO THE PURPOSE OF GOD FOR MY LIFE.”

Philippians 1:9-10                            And this I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment], So that you may surely learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble].

There are several things here that eliminate the potential for being vague, they are “knowledge, keen insight, comprehensive discernment, sensing the vital, recognizing the highest and best, distinguishing the moral differences”.  The result however is equally as noble, “Untainted, pure, unerring, and blameless”. This is meat for another/later study

Today we will explore the following:-

PART 1

WISDOM & COSTLY EXPERIENCE

Proverbs 5:1                                       MY SON, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by ACTUAL AND COSTLY EXPERIENCE], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you],

Right at the outset I want to establish that “experience” in the terms of Proverbs 5:1 has nothing to do with what “we feel”. Costly experience here refers to that subduing of selfish expression, which today infects so much of the church. Whilst the impression may be given that what we are doing is praising the Lord, the truth is so many are looking for a “sensation or experience” that confirms what we think.

Solomon however was conscious of the real foundation of wisdom and it had nothing to do with satisfying self, or with being smart, but everything to do with pleasing God.

So, the cost comes in “spending myself” in accruing the evidences of Wisdom as recorded in JAMES 3:17, I have to promote peace, at my own cost, I have to be gentle, at my own cost, I have to be easily entreated, at my own cost, etc. People may see me as weak or lily livered and try to walk over me, but Father will see me through these “costly experiences” as they pay their dividend in my drawing close to Him. Do I value what I am given if there is no cost?

There is a great difference between education and experience? Education, or as the bible puts it, “Knowledge” is when you read the fine print; Experience is what you get when you don’t, and that, as Proverbs says, can be quite costly.

God tends to use alternative tests. He has a way of placing people and things in our paths – infuriating, imperfect people, those who have the ability to get right up our noses, incidents that greatly annoy. People who appear to eat more chocolate that we do, but are still stick thin. People who drop their house keys down the drain. People like me, with as many, though different faults as I have and then God asks us to love them. Often I found myself praying for a change in others, when it’s really my own attitude/heart that needs changing.

Being smart is often the result of “costly experience”, experience that “smarts.”

Wisdom requires humility. Notice there is no “E”, “G”, or “O” in humility!!!!  We must be teachable. If we are to put these things into practice, we must be willing to take a look at what we thought we knew about our self and the ideas we hold. It requires an outward focus not a selfish one. Often people who know a lot can’t get past that fact, and as a result never gain insight into what they know, it never morphs into “Understanding”.

Some of the experiences we have to face are part of Fathers “education”, sometimes called “chastening”. The word used “correction and discipline” in Hebrews 12 is very interesting, as follows:-

CHASTENING   From G3811; tutorage, that is, education or training; by implication disciplinary correction: – chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.

And so the “Recognition of the Purpose of Circumstance” becomes intensely relevant so that we do not “kick against the pricks” but luxuriate in the knowledge that God is at work both in our lives and in our surroundings as he tries to train us or educate us, and nurture us in His ways.

This is not just some vain theory, a trick to make us think that we are victims when in fact we are victors. We regress to groveling when we have been called to governing,

2 Corinthians 4:15                            FOR ALL [THESE] THINGS (also known as “circumstances … comments mine) are [taking place] FOR YOUR SAKE, so that the more grace (divine favor and spiritual blessing) (“spiritual blessings” is another can of worms, warranting further study …. Comments mine) extends to more and more people and multiplies through the many, the more thanksgiving may increase [and redound] to the glory of God.

Romans 8:28                                      We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] ALL THINGS (also known as circumstances … again, comments mine) work together and are [FITTING INTO A PLAN] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [HIS] DESIGN AND PURPOSE.

Let me extrapolate from this verse, “ALL THINGS —FITTING INTO A PLAN —– TO HIS DESIGN AND PURPOSE

Psalm 94:12                                        Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O Lord, and teach out of Your law,

Hebrews 12:5-6                                And have you [completely] forgotten the divine word of appeal and encouragement in which you are reasoned with and addressed as sons? My son, do not think lightly or scorn to submit to the correction and discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage and give up and faint when you are reproved or corrected by Him; FOR THE LORD CORRECTS AND DISCIPLINES EVERYONE WHOM HE LOVES, and He punishes, even scourges, every son whom He accepts and welcomes to His heart and cherishes. (In fact He puts circumstances in our way so that He can organise our “sonship” arrangements and so that we are ready to be “Presented”)

Revelation 3:19                                 Those whom I [dearly and tenderly] love, I tell their faults and convict and convince and reprove and chasten [I discipline and instruct them]. SO, BE ENTHUSIASTIC and in earnest and burning with zeal and repent [CHANGING YOUR MIND AND ATTITUDE].

What an exposing of Fathers heart, firstly He tells us how much He loves us, “tenderly and dearly”, and then explains how He develops this love mutually, and then He tells us the route to achieve “RECOGNITION OF THE PURPOSE OF CIRCUMSTANCE:

How many opportunities have you been afforded this last week to be PURE, PEACEABLE, GENTLE, EASILY ENTREATED, MERCIFUL, EVIDENCING GOOD FRUITS, DEVOID OF PARTIALITY, WITHOUT HYPOCRISY? Involved in each one of these attributes of WISDOM is a learning curve, a discipline, a cost.

THE TRYING OF ONE GRACE PRODUCES ANOTHER, AND CASCADES.

PART 2

PATIENCE AND TRIBULATION

  1. PATIENCE                                                             PROCURED BY TRIBULATION

The first thing we must know is that TRIBULATION IS INEVITABLE. “In the world you will have tribulation,” Jesus states emphatically in John 16:33. Not you might,” but “you will.” It is worth looking at the amplification of this verse.

John 16:33                                          I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. (I think this is very considerate of John, to alert us right up front that the outcome would be satisfactory!!!!)  In the world you HAVE TRIBULATION AND TRIALS AND DISTRESS AND FRUSTRATION; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! (Could I suggest these are all characteristics found in “PATIENCE”?) For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

If we can grasp just this next verse:-

1 Thessalonians 3:3                         That no one [of you] should be disturbed and beguiled and led astray by these AFFLICTIONS AND DIFFICULTIES [to which I have referred] (commonly called “circumstances” …  comments mine). For you yourselves know that THIS IS [UNAVOIDABLE IN OUR POSITION, AND MUST BE RECOGNIZED as] our appointed lot.

This last phrase carries enormous implications, for as we recognise what is the intention, when we realise it is “OUR APPOINTED LOT”, means that such was the divine arrangement.

Our afflictions or “TRIBULATIONS” do not result from chance, but are the necessary consequence of our Christianity; they arise from the appointment and ordinance of God. Tribulation is the Christian’s portion. Whatever truth there may be in the saying that prosperity is the promise of the Old Testament, affliction is certainly the promise of the New, and is not or does not occur to distress or deter us, but to develop and distinguish us, IT IS NOT A PENALTY BUT A PROMOTION.

And so, there is a compelling reason for our appreciation of the part PATIENCE has to play in our recognition of its part in “CIRCUMSTANCE

NEED OF PATIENCE Let me quickly refresh our minds of that with the ubiquitous “Factor of Eight” virtues that constitute “the wisdom from above”.

Pure                                                                      )

Peaceable                                                            )

Gentle                                                                  )

Accommodating (or easily entreated)          )           ALL PART OF PATIENCE!!!

Full of mercy                                                      )

Good fruit                                                           )

Impartial                                                              )

Not hypocritical                                                 )

You will, as I have, experienced the “pricks and goad’s” that Father uses to identify the improvements in my nature brought about by his deposition of Wisdom with which I have been “liberally and ungrudgingly” endowed because I asked for it when I was lacking.

It was then I began to discover that there were some qualifications which I obviously lacked, for as each little test arose I found myself failing miserably and the disappointment at times was almost palpable. It was then that the apostle Paul confronted me in his letter to the Hebrews that there was a personality trait in need of a little fine tuning. So that you don’t feel left out let me insert the Scripture here to clarify what the deficiency consisted of.

Hebrews 10:36                                  For YOU HAVE NEED OF STEADFAST PATIENCE AND ENDURANCE, so that you may perform and fully accomplish the will of God, and thus receive and carry away [and enjoy to the full] what is promised. (In this case, “Wisdom from Above”)

It is a well-known fact that patience is a characteristic of the male species!!!!! And therefore I find it quite confronting that the Apostle should be so outspoken as to suggest that there could be some lack of this characteristic in me, but in reflection, I find that there is much promised in God’s Word that I obviously have not yet “received and carried away and enjoy to the full”. Because Paul continues to say, “what is promised” requires me to explore further the implications of “STEADFAST PATIENCE AND ENDURANCE”.

I found it therefore not the least bit comfortable in my consultation with the Apostle James where he suggests the necessity for “TRIAL AND PROVING OF YOUR FAITH”. His recommendations in chapter 1:3 are not just suggestions, they are adamant.

James 1:3-5                                        Be assured and understand that THE TRIAL AND PROVING OF YOUR FAITH BRING OUT ENDURANCE AND STEADFASTNESS AND PATIENCE. But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing. If any of you is deficient in wisdom, (recall that I mentioned that all the ethos of Wisdom is involved in “PATIENCE”?)  let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him.

James is equally as audacious as his Apostolic colleague Paul, and hastens to suggest that this unpalatable roadmap will lead me to the acquisition of “ENDURANCE, STEADFASTNESS, and PATIENCE”.

It was then, and equally as confronting when Paul explained to the Romans that there were consequences in the pursuit of patience.

Romans 5:3-4                                     Moreover [let us also be full of joy now!] let us exult and triumph in our troubles and rejoice in our sufferings, KNOWING (this “knowing comes from both our study in the Word and by the PRACTICE of the Word …. Comments mine) that pressure and affliction and hardship produce patient and unswerving endurance. And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation.

IF WE DON’T “KNOW” WE WILL NEVER QUALIFY

Romans 8:25                                      But if we hope for what is still unseen by us, we wait for it with PATIENCE AND COMPOSURE.

So firstly I needed a better understanding of patience, and the Greek used in New Testament indicates that it is the characteristics of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings. “Patience” includes endurance, constancy, and perseverance.

It seems that the church at Thessalonica was reasonably well acquainted with the process as the apostle Paul applauds them and also recommends the evidence they provide “in the midst of persecutions and crushing distresses and afflictions”

2 Thessalonians 1:4                         And this is a cause of our mentioning you with pride among the churches (assemblies) of God for your steadfastness (your unflinching endurance and patience) and your firm faith in the midst of all the persecutions and crushing distresses and afflictions under which you are holding up.

So then we need to balance that with the “understanding” of “Tribulation” and although the Greek is clear it is not comforting. Strong’s concordance says tribulation consists of “pressure, and oppression, affliction, trouble”.

As a consequence of my ambition to qualify as James suggests, “be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing”. I had to step back and try to reconcile how I could qualify. As is the case with most of us I began to look for the easy way out. This consisted of my exploring some behaviour patterns which appeared natural to me, but obviously are contrary to the personality Father would like me to evidence. It was then I remembered what the Lord said to Ezekiel in Ezekiel 11:19, and I have taken the liberty of inserting in red the words which make this verse pertinent to my condition.

Ezekiel 11:19                                      And I will give them one heart (attitude)[a new heart (attitude)] and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart (attitude) out of their flesh, and will give them a heart (attitude) of flesh [SENSITIVE AND RESPONSIVE TO THE TOUCH OF THEIR GOD],  (repeated in Ezekiel 36:26)

Patience is the ability to tolerate waiting, delay, or frustration without becoming agitated or upset. It’s the ability to be able to control our emotions or impulses and proceed calmly when faced with difficulties. It comes from the Latin word “pati” which means to suffer, to endure, to bear. Needless to say, patience does not come easily to most of us and it’s probably harder now to be patient than historically it has ever been.

The instantaneous nature of so many aspects of modern society is empowering and also a great convenience. It’s so easy, in fact, that we take a lot of it for granted. Travel has never been faster. Communicating has never been easier. Watching “On Demand” entertainment and enjoying other forms of media is not only affordable, but requires as little as a click of the mouse or a television remote control. Unfortunately, the instantaneous aspect of so many facets of our lives has its drawbacks.

When we text message someone and don’t receive a response back for several hours, we debate and ponder the “meaning” of the delay — as if any postponement is an insult, a display of disinterest, or a subtle message that requires a deep interpretation. WE ARE IMPATIENT!!!!

Not only has Peter prescribed in 2 Peter 1 a route to being successfully “patient”, (see scripture further down, or look it up!!!) he is supported by Paul’s injunction to the Galatians, and it is worth noting that the fruit of the spirit incorporates several of the characteristics that form “THE WISDOM FROM ABOVE”, and it is also interesting to note that the letter to the Galatians turns around the order from 2 Peter 1 by starting off with the virtue of “love” whereas Peter concludes with the virtue of love.

Galatians 5:22-24                             But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, PATIENCE (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, Gentleness (meekness, humility), SELF-CONTROL (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge]. And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires. (And dare I include “their impatience!)

The thought still hovered in the back of my mind that maybe I could be excused in some respects and took the unusual route of asking the experts. They explained to me that I was either and A, B, C or D type personality and that was how I was hardwired for action. The only problem was I evidenced traits from all four categories and therefore risk becoming schizophrenic.

It is suggested that an impatient person is predisposed to perceive virtually all situations as threatening, not to their survival, but to their goals. And so “IMPATIENCE” again becomes a “self-centred” behaviour pattern, not a “God centred” trait. (See the study “WAY TO WALK”)

The next expert went on to explain that there are four different temperaments: –

SANGUINE, CHOLERIC, MELANCHOLIC, PHLEGMATIC    This only served to confuse me further, did not provide the excuses I was looking for, and all four again showed up in my nature, and so I have to concede that the advice of the Apostles was a much more promising route to traverse. It is far more secure to rely on the word of God and His directions for not only are His directions accurate but also preserving, they will keep us from being idle and unfruitful as nominated in 2 Peter 1 – 8 but also successful, proven by Joshua’s experience.

Joshua 9:14                                        So the [Israelite] men partook of their food and did not consult the Lord(Is this not a classical example of “impatience??)

You will recall this is after the Israelis had conducted some very successful incursions into enemy territory and eliminated hordes of the enemy under God’s direction. How often do we seek the counsel of men, like solicitors, barristers, marriage guidance counsellors, financial advisers, social commentators, psychologists etc., and how infrequently do we stop to learn the advice from Father?

So, I return to the premise that Paul addressed to the Hebrews, paraphrase, “YOU HAVE NEED OF PATIENCE”. This precious commodity is not like Wisdom, you just can’t ask for it and get a bucket load, it follows a very precise path that we explored previously, as follows: –

2 Peter 1:5-7                                      For this very reason, (what is the reason …..” become sharers (partakers) of the divine nature”) adding your diligence [to the divine promises], employ every effort in exercising your faith to DEVELOP virtue (excellence, resolution, Christian energy), and in [exercising] virtue [DEVELOP] knowledge (intelligence), And in [exercising] knowledge [DEVELOP] self-control, and in [exercising] self-control [DEVELOP] steadfastness (patience, endurance), and in [exercising] steadfastness [DEVELOP] godliness (piety), And in [exercising] godliness [DEVELOP] brotherly affection, and in [exercising] brotherly affection [DEVELOP] Christian love.

Seven times the word “DEVELOP” is used in this passage and obviously is not meant to be glossed over. And so, I determined to improve my understanding of this term and I add details of my search.

“DEVELOP”         To grow by degrees into a more mature or advanced or usable state.

Also, I found there were a number of synonyms: – grow, evolve, mature, expand, enlarge, Spring, at times, progress, prosper, succeed, arrive, flourish, blossom, gloom, enhance, amplify, refine, and improve, perfect.

Industry has coined an interesting term, and that is “Sustainable Development” and describe it as “a road map, and action plan for achieving sustainability in any activity that uses resources where immediate and inter-generational replication is demanded. As such Sustainable Development is the organiser and support for sustaining finite (in our case “infinite”) resources necessary for the needs of future generations.”

2 Peter 1 has drawn this road map or action plan with great clarity for us to be able to demonstrate “Sustainable Development” in the spiritual realm, but also to include the definition which says : – “To be made visible, clear, or easy to see, become manifest”. Surely this is a paraphrase of: –

Ephesians 5:11                                  Take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead [let your lives be so in contrast as to] expose and reprove and convict them.

A revision of this study in 2 Peter 1 will probably assist me in enhancing my “knowledge” which is a precursor of “self-control” which is the precursor of “PATIENCE”. The challenge which is found here, centres on firstly my developing “self-control”, and as Peter does not nominate any particular circumstance in which I have to evidence self-control, I have to take him to mean that self-control is to be applied in every avenue of my life.

Proverbs 5:1                                       MY SON, be attentive to my Wisdom [GODLY WISDOM LEARNED BY ACTUAL AND COSTLY EXPERIENCE], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you], (or in other words, wise up to what is happening around you… comments mine)

It would seem that there is no alternative for me if I want to attain to what Father offers in His Word, the dilemma is that you will be watching to see if I have “learned anything” and that I don’t get impatient with my progress but get serious about my complying.

James 1:6                                            Only it must be in faith that he asks with no wavering (no hesitating, no doubting). For the one who wavers (hesitates, doubts) is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown hither and thither and tossed by the wind.

If we think we are “patient” maybe we need to evaluate if it is ambivalence, indecision, vacillation, hesitancy, or even slackness and not only recall but evidence what James has said NO WAVERING, NO HESITATING, NO DOUBTING, the outward display of our “personality traits” will obviously betray our compliance. Stoical apathy and Christian Patience are two very different things, the first is an insensibility to circumstance and the second is a triumph over circumstance.

Hebrews 10:36                                  For you have need of steadfast patience and endurance, so that you may perform and fully accomplish the will of God, and thus receive and carry away [and enjoy to the full] what is promised.

Hebrews 12:1-2                                THEREFORE THEN, (or “Seeing that” …. Comments mine) since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us RUN WITH PATIENT ENDURANCE AND STEADY AND ACTIVE PERSISTENCE the appointed course of the race that is set before us, (or “Recognise the Purpose of the Circumstance which constitutes “the appointed course”…. Comments mine)

Hebrews 12:2                                    Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, (in other words, don’t let what is happening around us control us, recognise that we need to have our eyes on Him, not the “carryings on” … comments mine) Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Can I repeat here what Paul said to the Hebrews, at the risk of being repetitive but with the benefit of having it stick!!!!

Hebrews 10:36                                  FOR YOU HAVE NEED OF STEADFAST PATIENCE AND ENDURANCE, so that you may perform and fully accomplish the will of God, and thus receive and carry away [and enjoy to the full] what is promised.

PART 3

PROMOTION                                                                                                                 HUMILITY

  1. PROMOTION                                                                 THROUGH HUMILITY

James 4:10                                          Humble yourselves (it is preferable to “humble ourselves” rather than have someone else do it …. Comments mine) [feeling very insignificant] in the presence of the Lord, and HE WILL EXALT YOU [He will lift you up and make your lives significant].

Proverbs 3:34                                    Though He scoffs at the scoffers and scorns the scorners, yet HE GIVES HIS UNDESERVED FAVOR to the low [in rank], the HUMBLE, and the afflicted.

praotēs   From G4235; gentleness; by implication HUMILITY: – meekness.

True humility does not attract many in this new age of self-realization. We tend to equate humility with self-abasement, but such “humility” would attract only the mentally ill, and it is not Christian humility.”Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” (Rick Warren)

Matthew 23:12                                 Whoever exalts himself [with haughtiness and empty pride] shall be humbled (brought low), and whoever humbles himself [whoever has a modest opinion of himself and behaves accordingly] shall BE RAISED TO HONOR.

Our status in this world matters very little. It is God’s view of us that matters. We are important enough that Christ was willing to die for us, and we are important because God has called us. But we must not think that any measure we can see distinguishes us before God.

Paul warns us that none of us should “think of himself more highly than he ought” , THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEE HUMBLING PROCESSES OR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE WORK OF GOD

Romans: 12:3                                     For by the grace (unmerited favor of God) given to me I warn everyone among you not to estimate and think of himself more highly than he ought [not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance], but to rate his ability with sober judgment, each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him.

This is a sobering exercise, to “rate our ability” according to the “degree of faith” etc. How often do we feel competent in some matter when we have not applied the test of “FAITH” to the example?

And he warns us not to compare ourselves among ourselves

2 Corinthians: 10:12                        Not that we [have the audacity to] venture to class or [even to] compare ourselves with some who exalt and furnish testimonials for themselves! However, when they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely.

Rather, “in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself”. This is not inferring an “inferior mind” but a mind cultivated by recognition of the “Inconceivable Greatness” of our God.

Philippians 2:3                                   Do nothing from factional motives (unless of course you have political ambitions!!!!!! … comments mine) [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the TRUE SPIRIT OF HUMILITY (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves]

Someone has said “To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable”, but they had the wrong perspective, if we humble ourselves then our weakness is made perfect because He will exalt us when we are able to handle matters by recognising God at work.

THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEE HUMBLING PROCESSES OR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE WORK OF GOD

2 Corinthians 12:9                            But He said to me, My grace (My favor and loving-kindness and mercy) is enough for you [sufficient against any danger (or circumstance … comments mine) and enables you to bear the trouble manfully]; for My strength and power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and show themselves most effective IN [YOUR] WEAKNESS. Therefore, I will all the more gladly glory in my weaknesses and infirmities, that the strength and power of Christ (the Messiah) may rest (yes, may pitch a tent over and dwell) upon me!

This is the consequence of “Humility”, it becomes our “housing”, it becomes the strength and power of Christ, a covering, a dwelling place, so why am I so slow to embrace humility?

It seems that “HUMILITY” is a commodity that is hard to procure, but it is associated with another trait that is equally as difficult, and that is “CONTENTMENT”. (More on this in PART 8)

The fallen nature of man acquired a characteristic at that time called “WHAT IF”. This is a little different to the program “Wot If”, on the internet where you can find good deals for hotels and airfares. This “what if” is the questioning of a carnal mind, pondering the “could be’s, maybe’s”, when we should be seeing it is God at work.

TRUE HUMILITY EMBRACES CONTENTMENT It is the ability to subjugate any potential for self-gratification, and be happy with both the process and the outcome.

A LIFE OF CONTENTMENT DOES NOT DEPEND UPON THE PROVIDENCES OF GOD, BUT ON OUR PERSPECTIVE OF GOD

Proverbs 29:23                                  A man’s pride will bring him low, but he who is of a humble spirit will obtain honor.

Godly humility is being comfortable with who you are in the Lord and therefore putting others first. The picture of humility in the Bible is one of a strong person who loves others, not someone who is a wimp.

We need a proper perspective of humility because you might equate letting go with losing out.

THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEE HUMBLING PROCESSES OR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE WORK OF GOD

Practicing humility makes us teachable, and therefore wiser. It makes us better listeners and therefore more valuable friends. It allows us to examine ourselves and our personal traits without shame or judgment. It helps us get to know ourselves like never before. And, it opens up our hearts to the voice of God.

One of the ways God tries to teach us about HUMILITY is through His creation, but we have not yet begun to grasp His “Inconceivable Greatness”, for when we do we will not have any problem with humility, the Psalmist eloquently describes his state but not his condition.

Psalm 22:6                                          But I am a worm, and no man; I am the scorn of men, and despised by the people.

He then goes on to describe the extent of his affliction, for several verses, but then suddenly seems to get his focus right again.

Psalm 22:22-24                                 I will declare Your name to my brethren; in the midst of the congregation will I praise You. (Should we stop and ask, “how does a worm do that?”) You who fear (revere and worship) (this ability, to revere and worship is born out of recognition, recognising “His Name is Holy ….see PSALM 111:9) the Lord, praise Him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify Him. Fear (revere and worship) Him, all you offspring of Israel. For He has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither has He hidden His face from him, but when he cried to Him, He heard. (I like to think that it was when he RECOGNISED HIM, Father was on standby to respond.)

Moses was the person most accredited for humility.

Numbers 12:3                                    Now the man Moses was very meek (gentle, kind, and humble) OR ABOVE ALL the men on the face of the earth. (Isn’t that an interesting term to use when speaking of “humility”, the “OR” is the contrasting of humility, the defining quality and makes a man “ABOVE ALL!!!  Further evidence of Fathers plans for those who qualify … comments mine)

A lot of Moses’ humility came by hindsight. Moses looked back and saw all the years God worked with him, even though he wasn’t aware of it at times. As an infant Moses’ life was saved by a caring God. Moses’ looks, intelligence and charisma were given by a gracious God, and Moses knew it.

THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEE HUMBLING PROCESSES OR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE WORK OF GOD

Humility had been worked to such a deep place in Moses that he gave excuse after excuse to God for why he was the wrong person to be sent. When God answered every argument Moses finally just begged:-

Exodus 4:10                                        “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

God isn’t impressed with all our credentials or accomplishments; he is interested in our character, HE IS MORE CONCERNED WITH MY CONFORMITY THAN MY COMFORT.  He sees the root of our motives and he justly discerns our heart. So what did God see when he looked into the heart of Moses? According to the scripture, he saw a humble man–the most humble man on the face of the earth. Well he didn’t start off that way, not by a long shot.

This depth of humility in Moses, learned through all his experiences in Egypt, from being a fugitive, a shepherd, etc. that he gave excuse after excuse to God for why he wasn’t suitable. When God answered every argument Moses finally just begged.

Exodus 4:10                                        And Moses said to the Lord, O Lord, I am not eloquent or a man of words, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and have a heavy and awkward tongue.

I ask, was Moses at this time being humble or was he conscious that what he was being asked to do was too onerous and he was content to be a nobody, like “don’t rock my boat, I’ve been there and done that”. Well that’s what God wanted him to be, a nobody in his own eyes but a man after Gods own heart he had a man in his sights that He knew would be capable of handling Fathers supernatural endorsement without any attached ego.

Nowhere in the word “Humility”, do we find the letters E or G or O

James 1:9                                            Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his elevation [as a Christian, called to the true riches and to be an heir of God],

PROMOTION COMES THROUGH HUMILITY

THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEE HUMBLING PROCESSES OR CIRCUMSTANCES AS THE WORK OF GOD

PART 4

OBEDIENCE                                                                                                           SUFFERING

  1. OBEDIENCE LEARNED THROUGH SUFFERING

Hebrews 5:8                                       Although He was a Son, He learned [active, special] obedience through what He suffered

The Greek word used here for “Obedience” is hupakoē hoop-ak-o-ay’

From G5219; attentive hearkening, that is, (by implication) compliance or submission: – obedience, (make) obedient, obey (-ing).

Does this Greek definition give us any “wriggle room”?

Obedience is a characteristic that was damaged dramatically but not irreparably through the behaviour of Adam and Eve, and is the reason why we now have to have such extensive Police Forces, Security Guards, Border Protection Agencies, Child Welfare Committees, Prisons, Detention Centres, Naughty Corners, Courts, each of which is commissioned to try and restore the order of God’s original creation, where Obedience was a “given”.

Much is made today of the disobedience of children, but dare I suggest that this phenomena is in large part due to the fact that their parents weren’t adequately disciplined, and consequently have passed on that characteristic.

The potential for spending time at Her Majesty’s Pleasure is multiplied today for those who would adhere to the injunction of Scripture and apply the principles in the appropriate fashion nominated, the “NO SMACK” brigade have trampled underfoot the advice of God’s Word.

Proverbs 22:6                                    Train up a child in the way he should go [and in keeping with his individual gift or bent], and when he is old he will not depart from it.

There are two specific aspects to this Scripture, firstly that the training should be in accordance with the directions of God’s word, not just enunciated but clearly demonstrated. The old cliché “Don’t do as I do, do as I say” is nothing short of an excuse for the person attempting to restore some order. Children learn earlier, better, and more durably by lessons of demonstration than by outbursts of exasperation.

Ephesians 6:4                                     Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.

Depending upon the degree and the “variety” of discipline we experienced will shape our concepts of what constitutes “obedience”. You will recall from our study in “Man’s Poverty in Praise” that we have a perfect example demonstrated by all the creation apart from man. All creation spends it’s time glorifying God by its obedience to the reason for its existence. Stop and consider for a moment the circuit of the Sun, the boundaries of the ocean, the control of the wind, orbits of the stars, they do not deviate one degree outside their nominated purpose.

The second aspect of Proverbs 22:6 acknowledges that children have particular gifts or proclivities that need to be recognised and cultivated. Children left to their own devices will eventually become adults with “vices”. To develop a child’s “gift or bent” requires that time is spent in recognising the area of their potential talent, then enhancing that direction and equally as important, diverting them from pursuits which are unprofitable. This demands obedience by both the child and parent, and so incurs “suffering”.

2 Timothy 3:15                                  And how from your childhood (someone here has obviously done a good job, for Paul recognised the “character” which had been established in childhood … comments mine) you have had a knowledge of and been acquainted with the sacred Writings, which are able to instruct you and give you the understanding for salvation which comes through faith in Christ Jesus [through the leaning of the entire human personality on God in Christ Jesus in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness].

Colossians 3:21                                 Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or fret your children [do not be hard on them or harass them], lest they become discouraged and sullen and morose and feel inferior and frustrated. [Do not break their spirit.]

Physical discipline is always done in love, never as a vent to the parent’s frustration. It is also just one part of discipline and should be used when the child shows defiance to a clear limit, not in the heat of the moment.

Having spent adequate discourse on obedience in children, what about obedience in adults? Obviously from what we have just explored, one would hope that the evidence of Proverbs 22:6 would shine forth gloriously in us as either parents and/or adults. Solomon said “when he is old he will not depart from it” and so the behaviour of us as adults will clearly identify if we learned anything by submitting to discipline. It indicates whether we suffered or ignored.

FATHER’S REMONSTRATIONS BY CIRCUMSTANCES ARE INTENDED TO DEVELOP OBEDIENCE

Whilst we can recover an obedient character, it is always preferable if we learn at the first-time round, THEN WE WON’T HAVE TO SUFFER AS MUCH!!!!!

1 Samuel 15:22                                 Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Anthony and Deanne have a puppy dog, a big puppy dog, and he has done several stints in “Dog Obedience Classes” but obviously has not suffered enough, because he still lacks a high degree of obedience. His obedience is conditional, offer him a morsel of food and he will do whatever you wish. Obviously he does not understand the scriptural principles, much like us, because we often look for a reward for our obedience to God’s word.

Obedience to God requires more than an outward performance of mechanical acts such as a soldier might perform at the command of his general. He might do exactly what he is told to do, but hate every minute and movement involved. But so long as he carries out his orders it is said that he has obeyed his commander. But obedience to God involves more than that. Obedience to God must come from the heart.

Romans 6:16-18                                Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, (including our own … comments mine) you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)?   But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart (or with a totally wholesome attitude … comments mine) to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed. And having been set free from sin, you have become the servants of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in thought, purpose, and action).

FATHER’S REMONSTRATIONS BY CIRCUMSTANCES ARE INTENDED TO DEVELOP OBEDIENCE

OBEDIENCE is a fruit of HUMILITY, it takes away the sense of entitlement and replaces it with a consciousness of our Creator and Redeemer, He is the Manager of our affairs, the tour leader of our journey, the provider of our needs, the healer of our bodies, the supplier of every breath, the architect of our future, the guarantor of our destiny, the guardian of our souls, the mender of the broken hearted, the restorer of the lost, AND HE IS CLOSER THAN HANDS OR FEET!!!!

PART 5

JOY                                                                                                                             TEMPTATION

  1. JOY COMES THROUGH TEMPTATION

James 1:2                                            Consider it WHOLLY JOYFUL, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.

James 1:12                                          BLESSED (HAPPY, TO BE ENVIED) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor’s] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.

To anyone who didn’t have at least a basic understanding of Scripture, they would consider the expressions of James as those of a masochist. This is due to the fact that we are negligent in recognising the purposes of God and that each and every trial, when approached in a joyful manner, will accrue benefits far beyond our imagination. James has described it as “The victors Crown of life”, but does this description conjure up in our minds a reward of significant consequence which would more than compensate for the temptation we face. Let us look at the Greek interpretation: –

G4735 “stephanos”    (stef’-an-os)

From an apparently primary “stepho” (to twine or wreathe); a chaplet (as a badge of royalty, a prize in the public games or a symbol of honor generally; but more conspicuous and elaborate than the simple fillet, G1238), literally or figuratively: – CROWN.

We should not pray so much for the removal of affliction, but for all those characteristics of wisdom to make a right use of it. It is not the temptations of Satan being referred to here, or temptations to sin; for these cannot be matter of joy, but grief; these are fiery darts, and give a great deal of uneasiness and trouble; but afflictions and persecutions for the sake of the Gospel, which are identified here and elsewhere, are to be JOYFUL OCASSIONS because they are trials of the faith of God’s people, and of other graces of the Spirit of God.

One thing we must learn, and early/quickly is the first word Paul uses in JAMES 1:2 and that is “CONSIDER”. This key concept that will help us to overcome the attractions of earthly goods is contained in the word “consider” is the basic idea to evaluate, assess, and judge between two options.  Those two options generally are composed of either “WIN” or “WALLOW”, and we make the choice.

It is not to be understood as meaning that these trials are joyful in themselves, but that as a means to beneficial results they are to be rejoiced in; it is the same thought as that contained in:-

Hebrews 12:11                                  For the time being (while we are subject to the temptation)  no discipline (the Word uses the same word for discipline and education) brings joy, but seems grievous (you will recall I said we had a choice, and if we see it as “grievous” then we will tend to wallow, not WIN … comments mine) and painful; but AFTERWARDS it yields a peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained (or “educated”) by it [a harvest of fruit which consists in righteousness–in conformity to God’s will in purpose, thought, and action, resulting in right living and right standing with God].

The ultimate purpose of temptation is that we struggle against it until we learn to resist and overcome and then be joyful. For in this process we are radically changed we are transformed from weak children, spiritually speaking, to adults of moral and spiritual strength and fortitude. Without this struggle and eventual genuine expression of JOY there would be no opportunity to grow out of a spiritual infancy, no chance to develop true moral fiber. Each time we resist temptation our character is strengthened and refined moving us toward God’s goal of spiritual maturity.

1 Corinthians 10:13                         For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not adjusted and adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.

We often blame someone or something else for the temptation or trial that overtakes us, and that can be true is some cases, “the devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking who he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8), but there is a more insidious cause, much closer to home and which we overlook or ignore.

James 1:14-16                                   But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and BAITED BY HIS OWN EVIL DESIRE (lust, passions). Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death. Do not be misled, my beloved brethren.

You will recall the cliché “THOUGHTS ARE ACTIONS IN REHEARSAL” and this is what James is clearly identifying here. We cannot and should not be joyful if we allow these thoughts to materialise, but should be repentant.

Luke 22:40                                          And when He came to the place, He said to them, Pray that you may not [at all] enter into temptation.

Repeated again in: –

Luke 22:46                                          And He said to them, Why do you sleep? Get up and pray that you may not enter [at all] into temptation.

What better conclusion could we come to but that of the old Patriarch Habakkuk who obviously knew the extent and the intent of TRIALS AND TEMPTATIONS yet evidences a pattern that we need to not just remember, not just embrace, but EVIDENCE.

Habakkuk 3:17-19                            Though the fig tree does not blossom and there is no fruit on the vines, [though] the product of the olive fails and the fields yield no food, though the flock is cut off from the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, (sounds like a good starting point for a Country and Western singer!!! … comments mine) yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the [victorious] God of my salvation! The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds’ feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]! For the Chief Musician; with my stringed instruments.

Romans 8:37                                      Yet amid all these things (or circumstances … comments mine) we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us. (an adequate cause for JOY!!!)

Psalm 30:5                                          For His anger is but for a moment, but His favor is for a lifetime or in His favor is life. Weeping may endure for a night, BUT JOY COMES IN THE MORNING.

There is a phrase used extensively in our society these days and it goes like this: – “GET OVER IT” and it is probably applicable to our situation, because “JOY COMES IN THE MORNING”

2 Corinthians 4:17-18                     For our light, momentary affliction (this slight distress of the passing hour) is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory [beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!], Since we consider and look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are visible are temporal (brief and fleeting), but the things that are invisible are deathless and everlasting.

PART 6

FAITH                                                                                                                                    PROVED

FAITH         HAS TO BE PROVED

James 1:3                                            Be assured and understand that the trial and PROVING OF YOUR FAITH bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience.

Notice that this verse follows on directly after the issue of “JOY THROUGH TEMPTATION”, James is not about to let up on us whilst he has our attention.

What are the immediate results of this “PROVING”, it is an enormous leap forward in spiritual maturity, it produces “ENDURANCE AND STEADFAST PATIENCE”. PROVING in this case is the equivalent of “ASSAYING” precious metals, the better the “proof” the higher the quality.

How inseparable are  these vital characteristics, JOY, FAITH, TEMPTATION, PROOF, they are like “Siamese Twins”, the joining of like “organs” of spiritual maturity means that they cannot survive in isolation but are to be developed as a suite of traits that are God glorifying and enormously satisfying.

1 Peter 4:12                                        Beloved, do not be amazed and bewildered at the fiery ordeal (think “smelting” or assaying metals) which is taking place to test your quality, (same as “PROVE YOUR FAITH” … comments mine) as though something strange (unusual and alien to you and your position) were befalling you.

Peter is equally blasé about these matters as James is, they both have a deep and expansive grasp of what the exigencies of life are all about, “NOTHING STRANGE HERE” says Peter!

The apostle exhorts them not to look upon their afflictions that either did, or should attend them, as strange and uncommon things. Afflictions, of whatsoever kind, are not things of chance, and do not rise up out of the dust, but are by the appointment, and according to the will of God. These are “CIRCUMSTANCES” and we need to be able to RECOGNISE THE PURPOSE OF CIRCUMSTANCE

1 Peter 1:7                                          So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [YOUR FAITH] WHICH IS INFINITELY MORE PRECIOUS THAN THE PERISHABLE GOLD which is tested and purified by fire. (think “smelting” or assaying metals) [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed.

This is a telling verse, for it sets out to educate us that the trials or temptations or circumstances that are “scheduled” are not some warm fuzzy feelings but arduous assaying of the metal of our character. The bible talks about “Silver purified seven times”, (Psalm 12:6) and here the gold is firstly “TESTED” and then “PURIFIED”, and probably undergoes the same strenuous refining as the silver.

I found it interesting that the “Ancients” developed a method of purifying the ore containing gold called “CUPELLATION”.

Cupellation is the technique that forms the first part of the fire assay process, in which lead is added to the unrefined gold material. The mixture is heated in air to between 1,000°C and 1,100°C, at which point the gold-containing metal dissolves in the lead. All base metals, including the lead, are oxidized to form a lead oxide slag. The process is based on the principle that precious metals do not oxidize or react chemically, like the base metals; so when they are heated at high temperatures, the precious metals remain apart and the others react forming slags or other compounds. A gold-silver bullion, which also contains any platinum group metals (PGMs) present, remains. IF PURE GOLD IS REQUIRED, ADDITIONAL REFINING STEPS ARE NECESSARY TO SEPARATE OUT THE GOLD.

The highest grade of gold available commercially today is 24 Carat, but even at this level there is still some impurity in the final metal.

Carat conversion

58.33% – 62.50% = 14k (acclaimed 58.33%)
75.00% – 79.16% = 18k (acclaimed 75.00%)
91.66% – 95.83% = 22k (acclaimed 91.66%)
95.83% – 99.95% = 23k (acclaimed 95.83%)
99.95% and above                                =           24k            (acclaimed           99.99%)

It is interesting to note that even after all the processing that the gold has undergone, the best that can be achieved is 99.99%, there is still some impurity. Which makes the scriptural reference in 1 Peter 1:7 that much more significant “YOUR FAITH] WHICH IS INFINITELY MORE PRECIOUS THAN THE PERISHABLE GOLD

Again, we have to revert to the principle that if we are able to grasp even just a sliver of “GOD’S INCONCEIVABLE GREATNESS” then we will have that “UNLIMITED EXPECTATION”, or in the terms of this study “FAITH”. But even then, it is an irrevocable requirement that our “Unlimited Expectation” be tested or “PROVED”.  Under these circumstances however, that is, the recognition of God in His greatness, I would expect that the refinement that has occurred for us to reach that place will begin to “dazzle” as we reflect the purity of Christ, and the evidences of our faith, better than the very best gold.

My problem is, can I expect to recognise the “PROVING PROCESS” or will I be inclined to react or revert or rebel, or even try to rationalize. It is at time like this I need to be able to recall scripture that will rescue me from engaging in “WORTHLESS THOUGHTS

Ephesians 4:17 (ISV)                       Therefore, I tell you and insist on in the Lord not to live any longer like the gentiles live, THINKING WORTHLESS THOUGHTS.

And so if I want to be the vessel Father designed me to be, before time began, then it is imperative that I am intimately acquainted with the principals involved, I HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE THE PURPOSE OF CIRCUMSTANCE.

PART 7

GAZING                                                                                                                              UPWARD

  1. REDEMPTION       BY GAZING UPWARD

Luke 21:28                                          Now when these things begin to occur, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption (deliverance) is drawing near.

This chapter of Luke is chock a block with warnings of things that are to occur before the return of Jesus Christ and hastens to warn us that “WHEN THESE THINGS BEGIN TO OCCUR”, and so we have a road map and an atlas to guide us.

There is an inherent difficulty here for those who are unable, or unwilling to “RECOGNISE THE PURPOSE OF CIRCUMSTANCE”. Where men operate in the natural mind they are, as we saw in PART 6, FUNCTIONING IN FUTILITY.

So, let us quickly make a list of potential events that could be expected to “BEGIN TO OCCUR” so that we make sure we are “LOOKING UP”. The list comes from LUKE 21 and is comprised of things which have already taken place, such as the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70AD and concludes with events either now relevant or about to occur.

Whilst the events recorded in Luke 21, and spoken by Jesus some 2000 years ago, have had much fulfilment in history. The injunction of verse 28 is as relevant today as it was in antiquity, or even more valid now because the events in the times of the Apostles had much to do with the Jewish nation, whereas now, we who enjoy a greater hope and expectation, that is, “the climax of the times and the redemption of the saints” our attention to “LOOKING UP” should be that much more diligent.

It is not my intention to explain or debate “end times”, others are more studied and qualified in this area, my concentration is on OUR PREPARATION, for if that is not energetically pursued, there is an awful appointment waiting.

LUKE 21.

  1. “The destruction of the Temple” (verse 6) This was in AD70 and makes interesting historical reading
  2. “False teachers will arise” (verse 8) An example of this “misuse” is found in ACTS 19:13 where the exorcists knew the potency of Jesus name but could only identify with it by including the Apostle Paul. This is very relevant to the church today.
  3. “Wars”. (verse 9) This was fulfilled by the Romans at that time who were responsible for the destruction of the Temple
  4. “And Insurrections” (verse 9) These were different to the “wars” and probably referred to the internal troubles of the Jewish nation
  5. “Nation against nation” (verse 10) This seems to be a distinct and third sign, foreboding the general calamity of the Jews; that there should be not only seditions and internal wars, in the midst of their country, but there should be wars in other nations, one with another; and with the Jews.

THIS IS ALREADY A GOOD REASON FOR US TO BE LOOKING UP, THESE THINGS HAVE “BEGAN TO COME TO PASS” EVEN SO LONG AGO

  1. “Earthquakes” (verse 11) These were not uncommon in this area, and so the phenomena was both current and futuristic. The occurrence of earthquakes in this day and age seem to be more regular.
  2. “Famines and pestilence” (verse 11) One of the common effects of war, which destroys the fruits of the earth, not only is the land over run, but the farmer is cut down. “Pestilence” is accurately described here as “plagues, (generally of insects), “malignant, contagious or infectious epidemic”. This is so very relevant to what we can expect to see, things like Ebola, Swine and bird flu, cancers, heart conditions, etc. Time to look up!!!!!!!
  3. “Sights of terror” (verse 11) Some of the atrocities carried out by the Zealots, particularly in the sacking of Jerusalem, fulfilled this prophecy. However, there is adequate alarm sounded here as we today read and hear of the atrocities being carried out by ISIS Islamists, cruelty beyond comprehension, but to be regarded as a sign to “LOOK UP”.
  4. “Great signs from heaven” (verse 11) From historical records, which we have no way of verifying, there are reported events that appeared in the heavens, such as “a star hovering over the city like a sword” and then another report “before sun-setting, chariots and troops of soldiers in their armour were seen running about among the clouds, and surrounding cities.” I would suggest that these phenomena are similar types of events as those that accompanied the Children of Israel in the desert.
  5. “Persecution” (verse 12) The New Testament is full of reports of where this prophecy was fulfilled in people like Paul, Stephen, Peter, John etc. Should we then be prepared to endure similar treatment, for the following verse (13) proposes that this is our opportunity to declare our allegiance, and verses 14-15 identifies how we will proceed. Luke says “don’t worry, this is your great chance”!!!!
  6. “Delivered up and betrayed” (verse 16) The most awful part of this verse is that the betrayal will be by our nearest and dearest. Matthew 10:21 spells this out precisely. The animosity evidenced in families is unprecedented, and violence against spouses and children epidemic.
  7. “And you shall be hated and despised” (verse 17) Not hard to reconcile this one when you stand up for what is right. So it is not only relevant to Jesus time, but can be expected right now. SO LOOK UP! An interesting point here, verse 16 says “they will put you to death”, but verse 18 says “Not a hair of your head shall perish”, so you may lose your head but your hair will be OK.
  8. “Jerusalem surrounded by armies” (verse 20) The Jews experienced this event when the Romans invaded the city of Jerusalem, so obviously this sign was to be recognised as significant and so THESE THINGS HAVE BEGUN TO COME TO PASS. But should we consider this as relevant in this day and age, there are reports that Al-Qaida already has troops and facilities in all the areas adjoining Israel, a sobering thought. Israel is surrounded by Moslem nations and we are well acquainted as to the hoards from the North.
  9. “Great misery and anguish and distress shall be upon the land (verse 23). Again this has already been fulfilled but as we consider the plight of Israel today, with rocket attacks by Hamas from Gaza, threats from myriad sources. Jews in France are returning to Israel in droves due to the anti-Semitic attacks by followers of Islam. Clearly warned by Jesus that the gathering of the Roman armies in the neighborhood of Jerusalem was the unmistakable sign of the end of the Jewish polity, the Christian congregations fled to Pella beyond Jordan. Current unrest is a warning, TO LOOK UP
  10. “Fall by the mouth and edge of the sword” (verse 24) In the siege of Jerusalem there was great carnage, in excess of 1 million people were slain and almost 100,000 were taken away as slaves. Can we consider the holocaust as another “treading down by the gentiles
  11. “Signs in the sun, moon and stars” (verse 25) Though the mystery of this language suggests previous periods, but also that of Christ’s second coming. On November 13th in 1833 there was great meteor shower, where as some have suggested that around 200,000 meteors fell per hour and lit up the whole sky for hours. Almost every expression here in Luke 25 will be found to relate to the Lord’s coming in terrible national judgments.
  12. “Distress, trouble and anguish of nations in bewilderment and perplexity, at the roaring of the sea.” (verse 25) Part of the cosmic chaos, even the disrupted regulating effect of the moons influence on the tides will be so great as to cause absolute confusion as the seas respond in signalling God’s displeasure prior to his return. (Also refer Revelation 6:12-17)
  13. “Men fainting and dying with fear etc.” (verse 26) One of the enemy’s greatest tools is fear, a condition which should be foreign to God’s people because “perfect love casts out fear (1 JOHN 4:18 and 2 TIMOTHY 1:7) But the fear referred to here is not that initiated by the devil but initiated by God himself. It means that the terror would be so great that people would faint and be ready to die in view of the approaching calamities. And if this was true in respect to the judgments about to come upon Judea, how much more so will it be in the day of judgment, when the wicked will be arraigned before the Son of God, and when they shall have before them the prospect of the awful sufferings of hell – the pains and woes which shall continue forever!
  14. “Power of the Heavens will be shaken” (verse 26) or “dislocated”. That is, all that hold the heavenly bodies in their orbits and enables sun and moon to light the earth will give way. This convulsion in the heavens, previous to the Lord’s return is not as yet to be regarded as the end of the world, but only as a prelude to it. The signs associated with the Son of Man’s coming are cosmic, whereas those associated with Jerusalem’s fall are terrestrial, so that Luke kept these two events distinct.” Also note that it is “Heavens”, not heaven singular, because the kingdom of God will not be shaken. (See 2 Corinthians 5:1, “a house, eternal in the heavens”)
  15. “And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud”

If we are not living in expectancy then there is a reasonable chance that we might miss this great and marvellous day.

REDEMPTION COMES BY LOOKING UP

PART 8

GODLINESS                                                                                                       PERSECUTION

8              GODLINESS                         THROUGH PERSECUTION

2 Timothy 3:11-12                           Persecutions, sufferings–such as occurred to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, persecutions I endured, but out of them all the Lord delivered me. Indeed ALL WHO DELIGHT IN PIETY AND ARE DETERMINED TO LIVE A DEVOTED AND GODLY LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS WILL MEET WITH PERSECUTION [will be made to suffer because of their religious stand].

There is a natural tendency among men that when they are confronted by situations or circumstances which they consider inappropriate to their station in life, that they “pack their bags and run.”

The apostle Paul here is not proposing that we take that route, but is describing how these “persecutions, afflictions” are not peculiar to some particular location, but are universal and regular. Paul arrives in Lystra and heals a crippled man, much to the disgust of some of the locals. After being stoned, some people drag Paul’s dead body out of the city. Some believers find his body and as they stand around it, he comes back to life! Amazingly, he re-enters the city. The next day he and Barnabas travel to Derbe (Acts 14:19-20). They preach the gospel in Derbe then retrace their steps through Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch in order to strengthen the brethren.

This doesn’t sound like Paul was running away from any potential hazards that he might face in this area, but showed their utter disregard to the danger faced, as evidenced in: –

Acts 13:51                                           But [the apostles] shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.

So, after Paul had conducted his “evangelical campaign” in Derbe, notice how bold Paul and Barnabas have become.

Acts 14:21                                           When they had preached the good news (Gospel) to that town and made disciples of many of the people, they went back to Lystra and Iconium and Antioch, (towns in Turkey, a regular haunt of the Apostle … comments mine)

Does becoming “GODLY” suddenly seem a less attractive proposition? Well Matthew comes to our rescue by describing how beneficial this condition becomes together with a promise for the final outcome.

Matthew 5:10                                    Blessed and happy and enviably fortunate and spiritually prosperous (in the state in which the born-again child of God enjoys and finds satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, REGARDLESS OF HIS OUTWARD CONDITIONS) are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!

The Amplified version here stresses that the potential afflictions and trials are not to be expected as a “one off”, it says “Outwards ConditionS”, a plural form. So, having experienced one event, like the Apostle Paul, we should prepare ourselves for the next event, jailed once, or twice or more, beaten up at various times, shipwrecked more than once!!!

It is at this present time that we need to become acutely aware that every circumstance, whether it consists of persecutions, afflictions, deprivations, or all the alternatives we prefer, are all organised by God so that we can become “Blessed and happy and enviably fortunate and spiritually prosperous”, and that we do not regard the “OUTWARD CONDITIONS” as pertinent or relevant in our pursuit of godliness.

Do we really know what godliness is? We talk about it, read about it, look for it, and yet often have obscure concepts. Godliness is no optional spiritual luxury for a few quaint Christians of a bygone era or for some group of super saints of today. It is both the privilege and duty of every Christian to pursue godliness, to train himself to be godly, to study diligently the practice of godliness, AND BE READY TO RECOGNISE THAT IN OUR EFFORTS TO REACH THIS STATE, WE WILL BE PERSECUTED.

The dictionary is of very little help in clarifying for us what Godliness is. Its uses terms like “the quality or state of being spiritually pure or virtuous.” How inconclusive does that explanation become in the light of God’s word. It requires that we revert to the special provisions necessary to live a Godly life, but also to recognise and accommodate the various pressures which will attend this pursuit.

We don’t need any special talent or equipment. God has given to each one of us “everything we need for life and godliness” The most ordinary Christian has all that he needs, and the most talented Christian must use those same means in the practice of godliness.

2 Peter 1:3                                          For HIS DIVINE POWER HAS BESTOWED upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).

Godliness is devotion in action, a devotion born out of “Full, personal knowledge of Him”. It is not just a warm, fuzzy, emotional feeling about God, the kind of feeling we may get while singing some grand old hymn of praise or some modern-day chorus of worship. Neither is devotion to God merely a time of private Bible reading nor prayer, a practice we sometimes call “devotions.” BUT IN THE PROCESS, THERE WILL BE PERSECUTION.

1 Timothy 6:6                                    And it is, indeed, a source of immense profit, for] GODLINESS accompanied with CONTENTMENT (that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency) is great and abundant gain.

Recall Paul’s assertion “I have learned to be content” in:-

Philippians 4:11                                Not that I am implying that I was in any personal want, for I have learned how to be content (satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or disquieted) IN whatever state I am. (obviously Paul is including those occasions where he was being subjected to all sorts of mistreatment and deprivations … comments mine)

2 Peter 1:3-4                                      For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).

Real GODLINESS not only is evidenced in our love for God, but it stimulates within us a desire to enjoy God’s presence and fellowship on a continuing basis. It produces a longing for God himself, a deep and abiding RELATIONSHIP, but this condition cannot exist in a “greenhouse” or a nice warm incubator.

GODLINESS IS NURTURED IN PERSECUTION
