DESIRE DETERMINES OUR DESTINY ROSS SMITH
ALL REFERENCES FROM AMPLIFIED BIBLE UNLESS NOTED
“DESIRE” is defined as “an inclination to want things”. This is a rather broad definition and needs clarifying so that we centre our “DESIRE” where it will produce a result with eternal consequences that both satisfy us, and glorify the Lord.
Dictionary.com says, “Desire, craving, longing, yearning, Desire is a strong feeling, worthy or unworthy, that impels to the attainment or possession of something that is (in reality or imagination) within reach: a desire for success”.
Two key words appear in Dictionary.com definition for “desire”, “WORTHY or UNWORTHY”. This raises the question of where does our heart lie, and aligns the thrust of scripture that warns us of setting proper priority.
Colossians 3:2 And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
David, in the Psalms, describes a scenario involving people whom he calls “fools and arrogant” whose desires are misplaced, or “IMAGINATIVE”, and Paul in Corinthians (KJV) says “casting down imaginations”.
Psalms 73:7 Their eyes stand out with fatness, they have more than heart could wish; and THE IMAGINATIONS OF THEIR MINDS OVERFLOW [WITH FOLLIES].
2 Corinthians 10:5 [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings (imaginations) and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and WE LEAD EVERY THOUGHT AND PURPOSE AWAY CAPTIVE INTO THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST (THE MESSIAH, THE ANOINTED ONE),
It is pointless trying to imagine what eternity is like, content in the assurance that “He has gone to prepare a place for us”, (John 14:2-3) and if creation is any indicator of His genius then we should not limit our expectation by the restricted limits of a mortal being and miserable mind, of just mental conceptions, or vivid imaginations.
John 3:12 If I have told you of things that happen right here on the earth and yet none of you believes Me, how can you believe (trust Me, adhere to Me, rely on Me) if I tell you of heavenly things?
“DESIRE” is the feeling that accompanies an unsatisfied state, and that “unsatisfied state” is a yearning that has been planted by God that we might attain to the beauty of Holiness that constitutes His nature.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He also has planted eternity in men’s hearts and minds [a divinely implanted SENSE OF A PURPOSE working through the ages WHICH NOTHING UNDER THE SUN BUT GOD ALONE CAN SATISFY], yet so that men cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
It is probably time, no, it is definitely time, to review what occupies our ambitions and to be brutally honest with ourselves. Many ambitions are legal but not expedient. The decisive factor is, do our ambitions contain any element of “I, my, me, mine, want, wish”?
“Desire” is a more respectable word than “want”, but is interchangeable, like “may I please have”, or “give it to me”.
“DESIRES” are similar to “MOTIVES”, except DESIRES are what we want and MOTIVES are what desire is built upon. For example, my desire might be for a senior position in commerce, but my motivation can be for money or power.
DESIRE FREQUENTLY HAS AMBITION BUT LACKS ENERGY.
This is why we have to “EXAMINE OUR MOTIVES”.
2 Corinthians 5:10(B) Considering what his purpose and motive have been, and what he has achieved, been busy with, and given himself and his attention to accomplishing].
1 Peter 4:2 So that he can no longer spend the rest of his natural life living by [his] human appetites and desires, but [he lives] for what God wills.
Galatians 5:17 For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
Galatian 5:24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires.
Acts 1:24 And they prayed and said, You, Lord, Who know all hearts (their thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, purposes, and endeavours)
Our desire, when properly centred should have as its objective our return to Father’s original design, “made in His image and likeness”. (Genesis 1:27), and all that we do should be to the glory of God.
“IF IT IS NOT GLORIFYING THEN IT IS NOT ON”.
“DESIRE” is a heart condition, or as we have seen, the heart is, in fact, our attitude, and it is from our attitude that “flow the issues of life”.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep and guard your heart (Your attitude … comments mine) with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.
This requires re-examination of our motives, the things which propel and motivate us, and where the motivation is selfish, where the concentration is on “I, my, me, mine,” then the heart requires some serious attention, for it is deeply wounded.
Colossians 3:2 And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
Aim and ambition are synonymous, sometimes called “hope” both infer objectives. Romans 8:24 clearly defines that we are seeking an objective that has far greater consequences than those things which will satisfy our sensual appetites. Paul says that if we can “SEE” the objective then it is not the goal we should be looking for. (See also 1 Timothy 1:5 for “object and purpose)
Romans 8:24 For in [this] hope we were saved. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. FOR HOW CAN ONE HOPE FOR WHAT HE ALREADY SEES?
“AIM” is a vital aspect of our behaviour. We should be precise in all our ways. This takes practice and any athlete competing in a sport of skill knows just how much they have to apply themselves so that they have “accentuated aim”. The Bible gives a very good example of “DEVELOPED AIM”, and uses men who were left-handed, which generally is considered a disadvantage.
Judges 20:16 Among all these were 700 chosen left-handed men; every one could sling stones at a hair and not miss.
This is the same sort of precision and accuracy that Matthew proposes when he nominates the “AIM OR OBJECTIVE” that is to be the skill set of those whose “DESTINY” has been defined by their “DESIRE”, and if implemented as suggested then all those things we consider necessary for life, will ensue. Our “AIM” has several targets but the same objective.
Matthew 6:33 But SEEK AIM AT AND STRIVE AFTER first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together (All the objectives .. comments mine) will be given you besides. (See addenda Note 1 for further scripture confirming this point.)
1 Corinthians 14:1 EAGERLY PURSUE AND SEEK to acquire [this] love [MAKE IT YOUR AIM, your great quest]; and EARNESTLY DESIRE AND CULTIVATE the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy (interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching).
This “AIM or AMBITION or DESIRE” is not limited to just those who would occupy “pulpit ministry”, it is an instruction to all to assiduously pursue both the demonstration and inspiration, the resultant consequences of having “SANCTIFIED AIM or DEDICATED DESIRE”.
(SEE NOTE 3 REGARDING “AIM AND AMBITION”)
“DESIRE” can intensify to such a degree as to become a compulsion, or a craving. A practical example is of a man who is thirsty, and if disallowed water, or water it is withheld, then the desire for a refreshing drink becomes a craving, nothing else matters, and that inner compulsion drives unrelentingly for satisfaction.
2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, SEEK, CRAVE, AND REQUIRE OF NECESSITY My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
So often the question is asked, “Why don’t we see God move as He did throughout scripture”, and I think the answer is very simple, but the remedy is very profound.
Psalm 105:4 Seek, inquire of and for the Lord, and crave Him and His strength (His might and inflexibility to temptation); seek and require His face and His presence [continually] evermore.
David has spelt out the consequences of directing our desires, or ambitions, or cravings and the outcome is surely one to be vigorously pursued, not just for our benefit, but that others might see the result and “become envious” when people see how blest we are.
Psalm 119:2 Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are they who keep His testimonies, and who seek, inquire for and of Him and crave Him with the whole heart.
There are however two sides to the cravings that we identified earlier, as “WORTHY” or “UNWORTHY”, and it is opportune to make ourselves aware of those areas that Scripture identifies as “UNWORTHY”. The children of Israel set us examples of what happens when our “DESIRE” is misplaced, or “UNWORTHY” and it is recorded in Numbers 11 how they fared. (SEE ADDENDA NOTE 2)
1 Corinthians 10:6 Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did.
1 Timothy 6:9 But THOSE WHO CRAVE TO BE RICH fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish (useless, godless) and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction and miserable perishing.
PROPERLY POSITIONED DESIRE PROMOTES A POSITIVE OUTCOME, IN FACT IT DETERMINES OUR ETERNAL DESTINY.
We, however, cannot pursue a God endorsed “DESTINY” without an educated “DESIRE” because that would be like chasing the wind. Proverbs stated the obvious when it says, “DESIRE WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE IS NOT GOOD”. (Proverbs 19:2) Jude eloquently describes people who qualify in this respect and the description is not only graphic, but alarming.
Jude 1:11-12 Woe to them! For they have run riotously in the way of Cain, and have abandoned themselves for the sake of gain [it offers them, following] the error of Balaam, and have perished in rebellion [like that] of Korah! (V 12) These are hidden reefs (elements of danger) in your love feasts, where they boldly feast sumptuously [carousing together in your midst], without scruples providing for themselves [alone]. They are clouds without water, swept along by the winds; trees, without fruit at the late autumn gathering time–twice (doubly) dead, [lifeless and] plucked up by the roots;
I am sure I would get a unanimous, positive response from everyone I ask the question, “Do you have a desire, or an ambition, to please God or be pleasing to God?” Only the very corrupt find this proposition objectionable because with this “desire” there has the to be “DEDICATION”. The sort of “DEDICATION” required was espoused to the Romans when Paul wrote
Romans 12:1 I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and BEG OF YOU in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a DECISIVE DEDICATION of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as A LIVING SACRIFICE, HOLY (DEVOTED, CONSECRATED) AND WELL PLEASING TO GOD, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
Notice the “DEDICATION” Paul is pleading for is all-encompassing, not just some of our time or resources, not just some of our God-given talents, but BODIES, MEMBERS, FACULTIES and not just as an offer to serve him, but to make a SACRIFICE. This I understand in the first instance is to rid our hearts of all selfishness, the “I, MY, ME, MINE, WANT, WISH” WALLOW”, as any trace of the old man will either contaminate or disqualify our participation in the bold plan Father has for mankind.
Paul says he is not asking too much, it is just “OUR REASONABLE, RATIONAL, INTELLIGENT service and worship. But he has included the same requirement as in Proverbs, it is INTELLIGENT where Proverbs says, KNOWLEDGE. If we now relate this back again to the Word of God, the acquirement of “KNOWLEDGE” is closely bound to the “PLEASING” God as above, and requires a “DESIRE” that aligns with Fathers nominated route.
2 Timothy 2:15 STUDY and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God APPROVED (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analysing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skilfully teaching] the Word of Truth.
Similarly, there are few who have sufficient “DESIRE” to put into effect the requirements of 2 Peter 1:5-7 and Peter obviously assumes that we had the necessary “craving” to please God, and that the effort was far outstripped by the reward. He says, (in truncated form,
“adding your diligence,
employ every effort,
exercise your faith,
develop virtue (excellence, resolution, Christian energy),
develop knowledge (intelligence),
develop self-control,
develop steadfastness (patience, endurance),
develop godliness (piety),
develop brotherly affection,
develop Christian love”.
The effort to make DESIRE a reality, is mentioned 10 times in 3 verses, all related to growth and all requiring “DESIRE”.
None of this “AMBITION or DESIRE” can be achieved without the sort of application that Peter nominates, and I am sure he is speaking from experience, not just from some theoretical proposition or cerebral spasm that took his fancy while sitting out on Galilee trying to catch some fish.
Many of us would stand embarrassed if our demonstrated “DESIRE or AMBITION” was measured against almost any elite athlete. The Christian has a far greater “DESTINY” to gain over the athlete who is satisfied by a gold medal, but the training, self-control, dietary restriction, that precious commodity called “DEDICATION” is so intense it vaccinates them from the decay of selfishness and personal pampering.
DAMNED BY DESIRE
There is a DESTINY to be avoided, but it is inescapable to those whose desire is perverse. 2 Peter 2 gives a graphic description of the persons and their participation—– Peter introduces his warning to, “those who walk after the flesh”. We might recoil at the suggestion that we in any way might qualify for this description, but let me ask if you have engaged in any of the following?
2 Peter 2:10
Scorn or despise authority (see Romans 13:1)
Self- willed – self-loving (see 2 Timothy 3:2)
Scoff and reviled dignitaries (see Jude 1:8)
Rail at things of which we are ignorant (see Ephesians 4:18)
Forsaking the straight road (see Matthew 7:14)
This misplaced “DESIRE or AMBITION” damns the perpetrator, and Peter leaves no doubt as to the outcome.
2 Peter 2:13 Being DESTINED TO RECEIVE [PUNISHMENT as] the reward of [their] unrighteousness [suffering wrong as the hire for their wrongdoing]. They count it a delight to revel in the daytime [living luxuriously and delicately]. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their deceptions (or misplaced ambitions and desires .. comments mine) and carousing together [even] as they feast with you.
Unfortunate events in the wider church life has produced a plague of “scoffers”, many of whom once held dear the principles of the Word of God, but due to circumstances or events that have occurred they have forsaken the ways of the Lord and find their satisfaction in “fleshly desires”, ignoring the evidence all-around of God’s genius and creativity but “they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20, and it can get even worse. (2 Peter 2:20)
2 Peter 3:3 -5 To begin with, YOU MUST KNOW AND UNDERSTAND this, that scoffers (mockers) will come in the last days with scoffing, [people who] walk after their own fleshly desires (V4) And say, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the forefathers fell asleep, all things have continued exactly as they did from the beginning of creation. (V5) For they willfully overlook and forget this [fact], that the heavens [came into] existence long ago by the word of God, and the earth also which was formed out of water and by means of water.
The antidote for this condition, this lack of proper “DESIRE and DEDICATION” is remedied by regular and spiritual fellowship, not just social gatherings. A lack of fellowship is indicative of a lack of commitment, and exposes the person to the potential for incorrect concepts.
Malachi 3:16-18 Then those who feared the Lord TALKED OFTEN ONE TO ANOTHER; and the Lord listened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who reverenced and worshipfully feared the Lord and who thought on His name. (V 17) And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. (V 18) Then shall you return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who does not serve Him.
DESIRE PROPERLY ALIGNED PROVIDES DISCERNMENT (John 7:17)
DESIRE HAS TO DELETE DEMAND (Matthew 16:24)
DESIRE CAN BE A DELIGHT (Psalm 37:4)
DESIRE CAN BE GOD ENERGISED (Philippians 2:13)
DESIRE MUST DICTATE OUR DAY
We should, by this time, be aware that every moment of the day is under the watchful eye of our God, whose intention is only ever for our good and well-being. When I hear someone say “I am having a bad day, or a bad week, I can only assume that they have stepped out of the light of God’s favour to pursue their own goal.
To think the thought that “I am having a bad day/week”, should be sufficient alert to us that we are not walking Father’s established route for us. If we innocently digress, an occurrence that should become more infrequent, we have Father’s assurance, “You will hear a voice behind you”. (Isaiah 30:21)
If, however, our detour is blatant, or perpetuated, then our hearing is seriously impaired, and this deficiency adversely affects our “DESIRE and our DESTINY”, often with disastrous consequences.
DEGREES OF DESIRE
Jesus understood this concept, and He was trying to alert the Disciples to how important the proper motive was to be experienced.
Luke 22:15 And He said to them, I HAVE EARNESTLY AND INTENSELY DESIRED to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
The KJV Bible uses the word “DESIRE” where Amplified uses “EARNESTLY” and so some clarity is required. The Greek explanation of the intensity with which Jesus approached the fellowship with His disciples, highlights the sincerity and dedication that has as its goal, the achievement of ministry, in Jesus case, the redemption of mankind, and in our case, the perpetuation of that cause.
DESIRE From, Strong’s G1909 (to yearn); to dote upon, that is, intensely crave possession (lawfully or wrongfully): – (earnestly) desire (greatly), (greatly) long (after), lust.
“DESIRE” has to become a verb, a doing word, and so no matter what word we use, “desire, appetite, proclivity, purpose, aim, goal”, it doesn’t matter the grammar, it is the object or subject that either legitimises or discounts our desire. (1 Peter 3:11)
If we desire a particular outcome are we prepared to ask ourselves the question, “am I prepared to expend the effort to change the word from a noun to a verb?” and if the answer does not align with God’s Word, then, am I ready and willing to make the necessary adjustments. If our “DESIRE” has proper alignment, our day will always be satisfying, not necessarily without pressure or stress, or test of character, but the revision at the end of the day will enable blessed rest, because our aim has been to glorify God.
THE ACTIONS WE PERFORM HERE AND NOW, FRUCTIFY OUR DESTINY
OUR DEEDS ARE AN OUTCOME OF OUR CHARACTER
CHARACTER IS MOULDED BY DESIRE, AS SEEN IN OUR CHARACTERISTIC
1 Peter 4:1-2 SO, SINCE Christ suffered in the flesh for us, for you, ARM YOURSELVES WITH THE SAME THOUGHT AND PURPOSE [PATIENTLY TO SUFFER RATHER THAN FAIL TO PLEASE GOD]. For whoever has suffered in the flesh [having the mind of Christ] is done with [intentional] sin [HAS STOPPED PLEASING HIMSELF AND THE WORLD, AND PLEASES GOD], (V 2) SO THAT HE CAN NO LONGER SPEND THE REST OF HIS NATURAL LIFE LIVING BY [HIS] HUMAN APPETITES AND DESIRES, BUT [HE LIVES] FOR WHAT GOD WILLS.

Note 1.
Luke 12:31 Only aim at and strive for and seek His kingdom, and all these things shall be supplied to you also.
Colossians 3:1 IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
1 Timothy 6:11 But as for you, O man of God, flee from all these things; aim at and pursue righteousness (right standing with God and true goodness), godliness (which is the loving fear of God and being Christlike), faith, love, steadfastness (patience), and gentleness of heart.
2 Timothy 2:22 Shun youthful lusts and flee from them, and aim at and pursue righteousness (all that is virtuous and good, right living, conformity to the will of God in thought, word, and deed); [and aim at and pursue] faith, love, [and] peace (harmony and concord with others) in fellowship with all [Christians], who call upon the Lord out of a pure heart.
“DESTINY” is not “FATE”, and our Christian perspectives must condemn “fatalism”. Faith in God’s divine providence, leaves room for free expression of the individuals will, or the objective of his “DESIRE”, it leaves to us the decision and the direction we wish to take and can be either “WORTHY or UNWORTHY”. Our actions will determine our destiny,
Ephesians 6:8 Knowing that for whatever good anyone does, he will receive his reward from the Lord, whether he is slave or free.
Jeremiah 32:19 Great [are You] in counsel and mighty in deeds, Whose eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, to reward or repay each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings,
Note 2
Numbers 11:4-5 And the mixed multitude among them [the rabble who followed Israel from Egypt] began to lust greatly [for familiar and dainty food], and the Israelites wept again and said, Who will give us meat to eat? V5 We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt and without cost, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.
Numbers 11:34 That place was called Kibroth-hattaavah [the graves of sensuous desire], because there they buried the people who lusted, whose physical appetite caused them to sin.
Note 3
Luke 12:31 Only aim at and strive for and seek His kingdom, and all these things shall be supplied to you also.
Romans 14:19 So let us then definitely aim for and eagerly pursue what makes for harmony and for mutual upbuilding (edification and development) of one another.
1 Thessalonians 4:11 To make it your ambition and definitely endeavour to live quietly and peacefully, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you,
