In view of the continuing furor seething in our nation regarding same sex marriage, and the conflicting and dishonest arguments being thoroughly and aggressively aired on all media by those whose principles are destructive to the divine order of marriage, I have been prompted to examine my/our position and posture required of us as set down in scripture.

This in no way suggesting that we become ambivalent about the matter, but that we see that the war is in the spiritual and so we must contend in the spiritual, the “principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12) and if we stand for truth then we may/will suffer, but God will win.

Colossians 2:15                                 [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross].

The first part of this study is aligned to how we should behave towards each other, the second part how we should behave towards God, and the way to avoid offence, and the consequences of offence.

IF WE DON’T GET THE FIRST PART RIGHT, THEN I QUESTION IF WE WILL EVER GET THE SECOND PART RIGHT

PART 1.                         OFFENCE ON THE HORIZONTAL – TO EACH OTHER

Firstly, no true Christian will be offended by these proponents of sin, BUT SURELY, THESE CHRISTIANS MAY, NO, THEY SURELY WILL, BE PERSECUTED. There are scriptural precepts that identify this state, and these two are particularly poignant.

Psalm 119:165                                   Great peace have they who love Your law; NOTHING SHALL OFFEND THEM OR MAKE THEM STUMBLE.

Matthew 5:11-12                             Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous–with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of your outward conditions) are you WHEN PEOPLE REVILE YOU AND PERSECUTE YOU AND SAY ALL KINDS OF EVIL THINGS AGAINST YOU FALSELY ON MY ACCOUNTBe glad and supremely joyful, for your reward in heaven is great (strong and intense), for in this same way people persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Do we understand what “OFFEND” means? The dictionary says, “Cause to feel upset, annoyed or resentful, act in disregard to laws, rules, contracts or promises”.  Should we at any time experience one or more of these sensations, particularly where God’s Word has set the “rules”, then it is the conscience prick or prompt to do a quick, no, a thorough check of our appreciation of God’s Word, for the Psalmist has been unequivocal in stating that the love of God’s law is the perfect antidote for attitudes or feelings that constitute the dictionary definition of “OFFEND”.

It is no wonder that the church of today is evidencing such impotence, it is a stunning indictment of our profession that “Jesus Christ is Lord”, when schisms and factions and unrest and revolt are occurring amongst those who would claim to be Christ’s followers.

We need to be reminded, not just from the pulpit, or from the Bible study, or from another Christian, but from our daily intense reading and study and  regards for the Word of God so that we see the fulfillment of the claims the Psalmist has made, and not only be free in our own spiritual life from the bondage of “OFFENCE” but also be a catalyst for the demonstration of what the Lord calls, “MY CHURCH”, and the inherent harmony of that body.

Psalm 119:165 goes on to identify even more benefit from this love of the Word, for we well know that any interruption to fellowship amongst God’s people frequently leads to one, or several people, deciding that they cannot and will not overlook the insensitivity of persons whose tongue has not yet been tamed, and disassociate themselves from fellowship. The resentment retained then results in what Solomon has observed, and truly identifies those who refuse to follow the principles of the Word.

It is noteworthy that Solomon calls them “BROTHER”, as this does not confirm their relationship to the Lord, but just their relationship to each other, for if they were truly “brothers in Christ”, then this fracture should not occur.

Proverbs 18:19                                  A brother offended is harder to be won over than a strong city, and [their] contentions separate them like the bars of a castle

It is our great duty as Christians to take care that we do not offend with our lips, and that we improve discourse and converse, as much as may be, and as frequently as judicious, for the good of others.

Is this not good enough reason for us to be acutely aware and alacritous in searching our hearts to rid us of anything that can interfere with our relationship with each other, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, ANY DISRUPTION WITH OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD?

Not only does this highlight the critical nature of not only knowing what the Word says but putting into practice what the Word says. THE DILEMMA WE FACE IS NOT THE STUDY OF GOD’S WORD WHERE WE DON’T UNDERSTAND, BUT IN APPLYING THOSE AREAS WE DO UNDERSTAND.

James no doubt is identifying in chapter 3, a particular group of people who are yet to appreciate the Truth and be able to stand without wavering and overlook the ill-chosen words of some who lacks the love and humility that is required of Jesus’ disciples.

The “WE ALL” is a provocation that suggests we should strive to extricate ourselves from that group of people and get our tongues, and as a consequence, our whole body, under control and show a Christlike nature by curbing our outspokenness, and/or our attitude of “preciousness”!!!

Jamess 3:2                                          FOR WE ALL OFTEN STUMBLE AND FALL AND OFFEND IN MANY THINGS. AND IF ANYONE DOES NOT OFFEND IN SPEECH [NEVER SAYS THE WRONG THINGS], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature.

The consequences of taking “OFFENCE” are dire, not only is the attitude corrosive and destructive in the social dimension, but even more invasive in the spiritual dimension. Mark is not backward in pointing out the repercussions of our pettiness, where we are not prepared to let the Word of God direct and control my heart and puts into perspective how much we “LOVE GOD’S LAW.

Mark 4:17                                           And THEY HAVE NO REAL ROOT in themselves, and so they endure for a little while; then when trouble or persecution arises ON ACCOUNT OF THE WORD, they immediately are OFFENDED (Become Displeased, Indignant, Resentful) And THEY STUMBLE AND FALL AWAY.

We must learn firstly, that we must neither GIVE or TAKE offence, and this is completely possible when we are “in tune”, but utterly impossible when we are out of tune.  This does not mean that we cannot encourage each other into proper patterns, for it is necessary for us to watch out for one another and remind each other of indiscretions either in behaviour or doctrine. This is possible when we “LOVE GOD’S WORD”, and as a consequence we will “TAKE NO OFFENCE”, and it acts as a good measuring stick for our lives.

Ephesians 4:15 (A)                           Rather, let our lives lovingly express truth [in all things, SPEAKING TRULY, dealing truly, living truly.

Another appropriate gauge is the first two words of the scripture we started out with, that of Psalm 119:165, for it plainly states “GREAT PEACE” before setting down the conditions but placing “GREAT” as the preceding adjective.

Now “GREAT PEACE” is far better than just “PEACE”, it has characteristics that are quantifiable in our lives, and if we need clarity there is none better than:

Philippians 4:7                                   And GOD’S PEACE [shall be yours, THAT TRANQUIL STATE OF A SOUL ASSURED OF ITS SALVATION THROUGH CHRIST, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, THAT PEACE] WHICH TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING SHALL GARRISON AND MOUNT GUARD OVER YOUR HEARTS AND MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS.

We have the promise of “PEACE”, but if we lack that “PEACE” then this is another prompt for us to determine if we are complying or defying.

But there are again preceding verses, for Paul is remonstrating with the Philippians to engage and maintain “HARMONY”, a commodity of scarce proportions where there is any chance of “OFFENCE”.

Again, there are conditions, and to some these conditions are unpalatable, because they prevent me from voicing my objections, from getting on my high horse, from trying to vindicate my performance, or just plain, from taking offence. Note Isaiah states that the peace with be both “INTERNAL and EXTERNAL”.

Isaiah 32:17                                        And THE EFFECT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS will be peace [internal and external], and THE RESULT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS will be quietness and confident trust forever.

I like this proposal that the peace will be two way, and recalled what Proverbs 3:2 records, for you have heard me say that I intend to live a long time, but I want to do it “PEACEFULLY”.

Proverbs 3:2                                       For length of days and years of a life [worth living] and tranquillity [inward and outward and CONTINUING THROUGH OLD AGE TILL DEATH], THESE SHALL THEY ADD TO YOU.

We can only have real, true fellowship when we individually and personally examine and exterminate ALL HINDRANCES. If you are not “AT ONE” with God’s people, then you are “AT ODDS” with God’s people. This state however can be rectified, but if it isn’t dealt with Matthew makes it clear as to the consequences.

Joel 2:12                                              Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn and keep on coming (this is in fact “repentance) to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [UNTIL EVERY HINDRANCE IS REMOVED AND THE BROKEN FELLOWSHIP IS RESTORED].

Matthew 5:22                                    But I say to you that everyone who continues to be angry with his brother or harbors malice (enmity of heart) against him shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the court; and whoever speaks contemptuously and insultingly to his brother shall be liable to and unable to escape the punishment imposed by the Sanhedrin, AND WHOEVER SAYS, YOU CURSED FOOL! [YOU EMPTY-HEADED IDIOT!] SHALL BE LIABLE TO AND UNABLE TO ESCAPE THE HELL (GEHENNA) OF FIRE

OFFENCE” is really double mindedness, for we cannot serve two masters, offence is serving self, and is a compromise of our commitment to the Lord, to serve Him with: –

Luke 10:27                                          And he replied, YOU MUST LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; and your neighbour as yourself

James 5:16                                          Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. THE EARNEST (HEARTFELT, CONTINUED) PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS MAN MAKES TREMENDOUS POWER AVAILABLE [DYNAMIC IN ITS WORKING].

PART 2                           OFFENCE AGAINST GOD

This is no doubt the very serious and pointy end of the matter, we can be offensive to one another and that will destroy our fellowship with one another, but if we offend God, then the consequences might be devastating.

Isaiah 8:13                                          The Lord of hosts–regard Him as holy and honour His holy name [by regarding Him as your only hope of safety], and LET HIM BE YOUR FEAR AND LET HIM BE YOUR DREAD [LEST YOU OFFEND HIM BY YOUR FEAR OF MAN AND DISTRUST OF HIM].

Does not this verse stimulate a response in our heart that unless we have that Holy Awe of God, recognising that it is He Who owns us, it is He Who preserves us, it is He Who gives us every breath we breathe, and yet so often we scorn Him by our behaviour, both in our neglect of our regard for Him, and secondly by our inappropriate response to each other.

Moses and Aaron missed out on entering the Promised land simply because they ignored this principle and offended the God they served.

Numbers 20:12                                 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because you did not believe in (rely on, cling to) ME TO SANCTIFY ME IN THE EYES OF THE ISRAELITES, you therefore shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

See how important it is that we hold each other in esteem and respect so that we do not trivialise the task of letting our lives be a reflection of the Lord we serve, and so often by our negligence we influence other people into the same aberrations of behaviour and ignore the possible consequences.

Moses self-assertion in his unadvised speech came from unbelief, or forgetfulness of his dependence. Moses expressed his displeasure and resentment to the Israelites, here he sinned in passion and in so doing was “OFFENSIVE”, both to God and man.

This opinion is formed by Moses’ expression used in Numbers 20:10, as his address to the Israelites was to call them “REBELS”, and maybe he had compelling cause to view them as such, but it was not good enough reason to be offensive in his representing God, and secondly, he seems to have elevated his ego by saying “must we bring you water out of this rock?

Numbers 20:10                                 And Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation before the rock and Moses said to them, hear now, you rebels; MUST WE BRING YOU WATER OUT OF THIS ROCK?

We must never PRESUME, as Moses has done here, for it is regarded by God as an intrusion into His realm of both responsibility and ability. No matter how anyone else acts or says, God alone is the one Whom we must regard and fear with such Holy Awe, because “He has absolute power of life and death”.

James 4:12                                          ONE ONLY (speaking of God) is the Lawgiver and Judge Who is able to save and to destroy [THE ONE WHO HAS THE ABSOLUTE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH]. [But you] who are you that [you presume to] pass judgment on your neighbour

Paul then addresses our situation, in the here and now, with confronting language suitable for the seriousness of the situation. His introduction, “AND DO NOT” is not a recommendation but a direct order, for Paul is acutely aware of the consequences of OFFENCE AGAINST GOD. His recognition of the One to whom he refers is also graphic, “HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD”, not just the Holy Spirit, but inferring the Trinity.

What is it then that causes such significant impact upon the Holy Spirit of God that He can be “GRIEVED”, or “OFFENDED”? The causes are several, but one is very significant.

We are aware of most of these “OFFENCES” and because we are spiritually inclined, we try to avoid the first five areas of Ephesians 4 nominated in verse 25 to verse 29 and also verse 31, but tend to ignore verse 29, in that we are irresponsive to the promptings, the pricks and goads, the circumstances and events that are intended to raise our awareness of our God.

  • Open and gross sins
  • Anger
  • Licentiousness
  • Ingratitude
  • NEGLECT
  • RESISTANCE

It is this last condition that causes the most disruption to a harmonious relationship with God. CHRISTIANS OFTEN RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT; He cautions us to be dead to the world; yet we forge on with  our selfish plans for gain or fame,  or to assert ourselves in our contact with others, disregarding the clarity of scripture by pursuing our own goals and ambitions, and as a consequence, we isolate ourselves from God because of our “OFFENCE” and cause God “GRIEF”.

Ephesians 4:30                                  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [DO NOT OFFEND OR VEX OR SADDEN HIM], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God’s own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).

To be cleared of any indictment in this respect, Paul further appeals and pleads with the church at Philippi to expend great effort in avoiding offending the Lord, not only by asking them to reflect on the instructions and examples he had left them, but to use their best efforts to achieve the desired result. He asks that there be “NO RESISTANCE” in the following terms

  • Work out
  • Cultivate
  • Carry out to the goal
  • Fully complete

But then goes on to give the parameters within which to achieve the result.

  • Reverence
  • Awe
  • Trembling self-distrust
  • Serious caution
  • Tenderness of conscience
  • Watchfulness
  • TIMIDLY SHRINKING FROM WHATEVER MIGHT OFFEND GOD AND DISCREDIT THE NAME OF CHRIST).

Philippians 2:12                                Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, TIMIDLY SHRINKING FROM WHATEVER MIGHT OFFEND GOD AND DISCREDIT THE NAME OF CHRIST).

So, dare I suggest that we have a very concise and precise compendium of behaviour patterns and character specifics, that are not obscure in their intention, nor impossible in the implementation.

The most rare and extraordinary ability is again the last one, for we are reticent to be seen as “shrinking violets” when we have something to do, but in this instance, there is such good advice, and such a good outcome, for our demonstration will serve to avoid “OFFENCE”, but also, we will be able to “GIVE CREDIT” to God by our life of contrast. (Ephesians 5:11)

ALL REFERENCES FROM THE AMPLIFIED VERSION UNLESS NOTED

Galatians 5:9                                      A little leaven (A SLIGHT INCLINATION TO ERROR, or a few false teachers) leavens the whole lump [it perverts the whole conception of faith or misleads the whole church].

Paul in his address to the church at Galatia records instructions that are probably more relevant today than in any other period. This is in accordance with the prophetic Word which advises that in the last days things would deteriorate, men would become more perverse, and even the creation will begin to creak and groan waiting for release. It is in this context that I have explored, maybe superficially,  the need for precision in God’s Word.

Context” is very important in scripture, but do we, by strict “contextualisation”, neuter the relevance or “INTENT” of Scripture? In so saying, we also have to be careful of the “literal translation”. Literalism means you read it naturally, accept it says what it says, and means what it says without understanding the “INTENT”. That is not the intention of scripture, and sometimes literalism can be an opaque instrument for potential error.

To “translate” is to convert one language into another language, but translation does not necessarily include understanding. “Interpretation” goes a long way in leading to understanding, but what we are really needing, to understand the text or translation, is “meaning or intention” because men choose to interpret according to their predilection.

An author doesn’t generally write an article unless he/she wants to convey a message with a meaning. The problem is that we often extract a meaning that suits us, so the text is “translated” but minus the “intention”. It was stated by D.B. Frank “the authors intended meaning is indeed a factor in translation; nevertheless, it is not quite right to say translation is about translating an original author’s intended meaning”.

I find this objectionable as it infers the translator assumes he has a better grasp of the meaning than the author, an egotistical stance indeed!

This is nowhere more inappropriate than when it relates to Scripture, GOD IS NOT AMBIGUOUS. Frank further stated, “the meaning of the text to be translated is not located in a single place, and the grounding and anchor of translation should be the text itself and not in the thoughts and intentions of the author of the text”. I agree that the meaning is not located in a single place, that’s why the Bible confirms its meaning by the affirmation throughout the entire Word and requires the “teacher” to ably identify the relevance, and so we do not rely on a single statement/text but finds its confirmation from cover to cover.

Ephesians explains this, provides both the necessity and consequence of “His intentions”.

Ephesians 1:9                                     Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of HIS PURPOSE). [And it is this:] In accordance with HIS GOOD PLEASURE (HIS MERCIFUL INTENTION) which He had previously purposed and set forth in Him,

Ephesians 4:12                                  HIS INTENTION (His purpose in providing us with His Word   …   comments mine) was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church),

Accuse me if you will of being simplistic but Father set out to make everything simple so as to accommodate “dolts” (pardon me) like you and me. It is then reinforced in Romans that no one is exempt or can claim ignorance of God’s sovereignty, Father took care of that.

Romans 1:20                                      For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). SO [MEN] ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE [ALTOGETHER WITHOUT ANY DEFENSE OR JUSTIFICATION],

But it is here where “meaning”, and “intention” diverge, because dictionaries are basically summaries of meanings, how words are used, and the scope of meaning, ignoring where “intention” has a singular and particular purpose. Some conversations are overheard and so the intent can be distorted by only getting part of the statement and missing the intent. That is why the Bible is precise in 2 Timothy 2:15 in directing us to study, to ensure accuracy in the manner we handle the Truth, and the directives issued to Titus were equally as precise (Titus 2:8)

Ezra undertook on the onerous responsibility to the Israelites in,

Nehemiah 8:8                                    So, they read from the Book of the Law of God distinctly, FAITHFULLY AMPLIFYING AND GIVING THE SENSE SO THAT [THE PEOPLE] UNDERSTOOD THE READING.

How clear is that? In other words, the people were not left confused by the possible inferences of men who either “translated” or “interpreted” the sacred writings without the ability to clearly convey Fathers intentions.

The prophets “spoke”, not of themselves, but by inspiration, so it was not the thoughts or ideas of the prophet that were instrumental, but the Words of God.

2 Kings 24:2                                        The Lord sent against Jehoiakim bands of Chaldeans, of Syrians, of Moabites, and of Ammonites. And He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord WHICH HE SPOKE BY HIS SERVANTS THE PROPHETS.

Act 3:21                                               Whom heaven must receive [and retain] until the time for the complete restoration of all that God spoke by the mouth of all His holy prophets for ages past [from the most ancient time in the memory of man].

Hebrews 1:1                                       IN MANY separate revelations [each of which set forth a portion of the Truth] and in different ways God spoke of old to [our] forefathers in and by the prophets,

So now the focus is not on what we think the text is saying, but what God is really saying because we are assured that “All scripture is God-breathed”. (2 Timothy 3:16). The “meaning” of a text is what the author intended (read “God as the author here”) as compared with the “SIGNIFICANCE” of the text, or what it conveys to the reader.

This of course, as confirmed by the Word of God, depends upon our relationship with the Lord, because the “Natural non spiritual man does not admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly (meaningless nonsense) to him; and he is incapable of knowing them” (1 Corinthians 2:14) whereas the “Spiritual man” is able to understand and discern the intentions of the Word (1 Corinthians 2:15)

The objective of comprehending the “INTENT” and “CONTEXT” of scripture is not one of mental gymnastics or academic exhibition, but “disambiguation”, that is, “to state unambiguously or remove ambiguities from”. This cannot be done by a mere mortal mind, no matter how capable but arises from spiritual perspicuity as the Apostle defined. Texts are translated, but textual intentions are spiritually discerned.

1 Corinthians 2:14                            But the natural, nonspiritual man does not accept or welcome or admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly (meaningless nonsense) to him; and he is incapable of knowing them [of progressively recognizing, understanding, and becoming better acquainted with them] BECAUSE THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED AND ESTIMATED AND APPRECIATED.

There has been a saying in theological circles that states, “A text without a context is a pretext”, and certainly the context of a scripture assists in embracing and appreciating the situation or conditions in which the verse/chapter/book was written. However, to restrict the interpretation or translation of the scripture and to confine the application to the singular event is to devalue the possible or probable “intent” of that passage, and often to relegate it to history, which is just an uninspired record of an event.

For example, in Daniel 4:1 it reads, “I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house and prospering in my palace.” Firstly, not many of us are in that “context”, or illustrious environment, but have, hopefully, “learned to be content in whatsoever state we are found”. (Philippians 4:11)

But proceeding further down in Daniel 4, the King again makes a proclamation, just after he has had an alarming dream and was desperate for the meaning and having failed to get an answer or explanation from his magicians has to revert to Daniel, a spiritual man, for the interpretation of the nightmare he had gone through.

Daniel 4:17                                         This sentence is by the decree of the [heavenly] watchers and the decision is by the word of the holy ones, TO THE INTENT that the living MAY KNOW that the Most High [God] rules the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whomever He will and sets over it the humblest and lowliest of men.

Do we ignore the “INTENT” of this verse because we are not subject to the conditions of that “CONTEXT “of the time this incident occurred? Whilst much care needs to be applied, due to man’s ability to make scripture say what he wants it to say, this statement is unambiguous in its application to “THE LIVING”.

The unpalatable process we have to undergo of dispelling false teaching or unlearning error, once our mind has accepted that particular error as truth, (or by the process of mental osmosis) is 100 times more difficult than learning new things.  We will frequently object to a/the truth which seems foreign to our conscious experience by employing ridicule or resistance, and sometimes even violence. But just as cream rises to the top, so it is with truth, it cannot be suppressed forever, particularly to the sincere enquiring mind.

Anecdotes, metaphors and allegories are also to be carefully assessed, but due to the fact that we depend upon the Word of God for confirmation of many things that we elect to pursue, sometimes these things are immediately obvious although not within the context, but all have one overriding requirement, THEY MUST GLORIFY GOD. Let me give you an example.

Many years ago, I was required in my business dealings to travel overseas for several weeks at a time. On one particular trip I reached Africa on the first leg of the journey and the next morning awoke to the news that the very same aircraft I had flown in on had proceeded to Europe then returned and crashed at the airport where I had landed. The aircraft was destroyed from several rows in front of where I had been seated. With several weeks of travel, and still many flights ahead of me I was overtaken by great dread, should I continue, how do I get home, questions kept cascading through my mind. So, taking my Bible I went down and sat in the quiet of the early morning and the solitude of the swimming pool area, opened my Bible randomly and my eyes fell on this verse,

Psalm 139:9-10                                 If I take the wings of the morning or dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.

Should I have gone back and explored the “CONTEXT” in which the Psalmist had written this poignant statement, or was I out of order in embracing this promise with both hands, my whole heart, my entire mind? I think not, this was “sovereign intervention” of the most undeniable form, enabling me to see God more clearly in control of my life and also to confidently continue my journey with added enthusiasm realising Father was travelling with me every step of the way.

The “CONTEXT” here was bound up in my seriously fragile hope of safety. David knew that wherever he was and in whatever the circumstances, he was fully garrisoned by the Lord. My context was different to that of the Psalmist, but his expression, or the “INTENT”, was not only relevant and reassuring, but in my case was attributable to the providence of my God, and the genesis of a new awareness of His presence.

All of this event was in accordance with Father’s intentions, He has control over every circumstance, whether we like it, despise it, try to avoid it, and until we come to the place of accepting His total sovereignty, recognising His “Inconceivable Greatness”, then we are at risk of trying to use our mortal minds to grasp the “unimaginable”.

Ephesians 1:4-6                                 Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually PICKED US OUT FOR HIMSELF AS HIS OWN] IN CHRIST BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will because IT PLEASED HIM AND WAS HIS KIND INTENT]– [So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favour and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

Father’s “INTENTIONS” are here defined, before there was any “CONTEXT” with which we could identify but couched in terms that demand of us that we grasp the enormity and potential of God’s grace made available in the opportunity to be “holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach”.

There is a demand here, however, to embrace, understand and comprehend, and apply the Word of God without any of man’s interference to make it relevant to the age in which we live, so that the result ensues, “So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favour and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved”.

Proverbs 30:5                                    EVERY WORD of God is tried and purified; He is a shield to those who trust and take refuge in Him.

How frequently we “contaminate” the purity of God’s Word by applying novel concepts or introduce “relevancy” which only serves to detract from that which Father intended, how seriously careful must the student be to hear His voice, not the clamour of many voices and those who would seek to aggrandise their position.

1 Timothy 6:3-5                                But if anyone teaches otherwise and does not assent to the sound and wholesome messages of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and the teaching which is in agreement with godliness (piety toward God),  He is puffed up with pride and stupefied with conceit, [although he is] woefully ignorant. He has a morbid fondness for controversy and disputes and strife about words, which result in (produce) envy and jealousy, quarrels and dissension, abuse and insults and slander, and base suspicions, And protracted wrangling and wearing discussion and perpetual friction among men who are corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, who imagine that godliness or righteousness is a source of profit [a moneymaking business, a means of livelihood]. FROM SUCH WITHDRAW.

I would suggest that “INTENT” needs to be considered as relevant and as important as “CONTEXT”. Context is important so that we appreciate when the Scripture was penned or promoted. Does this risk the abandonment of much of the Old Testament or nullify the intention? To attempt to understand Scripture by the strict application of “context” is to limit the power of God’s Word to the level of our reasoning.

The subject is not as simple as one would imagine, for not only do we have to consider the context in parallel with the intent, we are also faced with the complications of the generation in which we live, the difficulty of translation, nuances of language, hermeneutics, current meanings of words and phrases, the particular version of the Word we use, biases, bigotries, analogies, metaphors, parables, allegory.

Whatever the persuasion we hold, there is one underlying and irrefutable fact that must always be kept in mind and that is,

2 Timothy 3:16-17                           EVERY SCRIPTURE IS GOD-BREATHED (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action), SO THAT the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Apostle Paul asserts in this verse in 2 Timothy 3 that there is current and appropriate content in “EVERY SCRIPTURE” and has not confined it to the environment of the day it was written, and only the most obtuse would seek to equivocate with his insight.

Maybe it is the refusal or inability to accept the preface that Paul established here that we do not see the evidence that follows, the “SO THAT,” evidenced by men who are “complete, proficient, well fitted, thoroughly equipped”, not by educational institutions which hand out qualifications based on doctoral thesis and postulated theories rather than accepting the trust in the simplicity that Father offers.

This explanation of what constitutes Scripture was preceded by a sobering thought one chapter earlier, and it is a principle that has been overlooked or ignored or openly abused by the church in far too many instances.

2 Timothy 2:15                                  STUDY and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analysing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

This introduces another dilemma, do we study the Bible academically, or do we just read it and blindly accept what we read conditioned by our current concepts, or do we rely on books and TV programs for our enlightenment.

Although the Bible records historical events is not a history book, all Scripture is given by inspiration and we should know history needs no inspiration. History is simply the recording of facts of an event. The inspiration for spiritual intent is often couched in fascinating stories constituting an incredible reading experience and a stimulation of our desire for more of Gpod.

Those who have been trained in Bible Colleges or similar institutions will no doubt have an inclination to the academic, or the hermeneutical and exegetical approach, and tend to flaunt their qualification that hangs on the wall as the endorsement of their interpretation. Others may have similar, and equally diaphanous proof of their grasp of the true meaning.

Proverbs 30:5-6                                EVERY WORD of God is tried and purified; He is a shield to those who trust and take refuge in Him. ADD NOT to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.

But there is only one way that really stacks up and may/does incorporate some “academic disciplines”, and it is useful to glean that direction from God’s Word as first base but will be accompanied by “fruit”.

The dependency some people have on their books and charts, their particular preference for a preacher or evangelist is unwise, without having implemented the same procedure that the Bereans did, they searched the scriptures to prove what they were hearing was factual. (Acts 17:11)

The book of Ephesians was written in an era when the Apostles and eye-witnesses of Jesus ministry were recording the events of that day, and although many today dispute that the era of the various gifts of the spirit and ministry gifts was relegated to that period of time, Paul puts that remise to rest by overtly teaching that these things are for the here and now.

Ephesians 4:10-13                            He Who descended is the [very] same as He Who also has ascended high above all the heavens, that He [His presence] might fill all things (the whole universe, from the lowest to the highest). AND HIS GIFTS WERE [VARIED; HE HIMSELF APPOINTED and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, travelling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. (I would like to think that those who claim to be “something” would have the endorsement of the “HE HIMSELF APPOINTED. Comments mine) HIS INTENTION (which has never changed   …   comments mine) was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church), [That it might develop] UNTIL WE ALL ATTAIN ONENESS IN THE FAITH and in the comprehension of the full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ’s own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.

The “Development” that Paul sought here was not based on programs, or on academic achievement or intellectual prowess, no, it was on a far more simple and pervasive ability, “UNTIL WE ALL ATTAIN ONENESS”, the singular attribute that determines if we are His disciples. (John 13:35) And it is as relevant today as it was when the words left his lips, the era has changed but God’s Word has never changed, never needs updating.

The existence of hundreds of religions and denominations and sects testifies to the universal confusion regarding proper biblical interpretation.

God has given us a body of teaching that is final and complete but still requiring clarity, the task of the “inspired” teacher and preacher, not the “inspirational” one. Our Christian faith rests on historical, objective revelation as recorded. That rules out all prophecies of foretelling, seers, and other forms of new revelation so avidly sought by many and perpetuated by some. The written Word is the only authority that is dependable and must be undistorted by proposed revision for relevancy of our times and supported by the prophetic of “forth-telling” or clarification of truth by the Holy Spirit in “inspired preaching and teaching.” (Ephesians 4:11)

Does this not include the prevalence of aberrations of things like gay marriage, lack of discipline of children, failure in recognition of authority, just to name a couple of things that in today’s social environment conflict with God’s Word yet are sidestepped as being bigotry or prejudice and lack the modern value of “INCLUSION” or “UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY”.

There is only one “UNITY” recognised by God and that is spelt out in,

John 17:23                                          I IN THEM AND YOU IN ME, in order THAT THEY MAY BECOME ONE AND PERFECTLY UNITED, that the world may know and [definitely] recognize that You sent Me and that You have loved them [even] as You have loved Me.

Revelation 22:18-19                        I [personally solemnly] warn everyone who listens to the statements of the prophecy [the predictions and the consolations and admonitions pertaining to them] IN THIS BOOK: If anyone shall ADD ANYTHING to them, God will add and lay upon him the plagues (the afflictions and the calamities) that are recorded and described in this book. And if ANYONE CANCELS OR TAKES AWAY FROM THE STATEMENTS OF THE BOOK OF THIS PROPHECY [THESE PREDICTIONS RELATING TO CHRIST’S KINGDOM AND ITS SPEEDY TRIUMPH, TOGETHER WITH THE CONSOLATIONS AND ADMONITIONS OR WARNINGS PERTAINING TO THEM], God will cancel and take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the city of holiness (purity and hallowedness), which are described and promised in this book.

The ability to “LOVE” is never learned from historical records, or hysterical rites, but is determined by how closely we adhere to the Word of God and the development of our relationship to Him, for it is said, “If you love Me, keep my commandments”, not just the ones we choose as “context” but every intention of scripture that He breathed and pollinated with “instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action)”, (2 Timothy 3:16)

What is the “CONTEXT” of 1 John 4? When this was written there was intense ferment and foment, the church was confronted by many delusions and heresies, and the Apostle, responsible for the establishment and proper performance of the church, wished to give tests for determining which voice was from God. The confession of Jesus Christ as the Incarnate Word, a spirit of love and gentleness, and the ambition to abide in the doctrine of the Apostles were signs that the speaker was commissioned by Christ and his teaching could be relied on.

1 John 4:7                                           Beloved, let us love one another, for love is (springs) from God; and he who loves [his fellowmen] is begotten (born) of God and is coming [progressively] to know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him].

No where does Paul call for anything more in our development but the ability to “LOVE”, the very essence of God’s character, and from that we will surely be able to determine His way, by knowing His will, we will “know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him].”

All this is in the “CONTEXT” of “LOVE” with the “INTENT” of “the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him” and becoming a reality in our lives.

There are those who would discount the Old Testament as being irrelevant, claiming they are under grace and not under the law, and whilst that is true in the general sense, it only holds true if we meet the conditions of grace. (For more details see the study “Under Grace and Over Confident”).

Galatians 5:13                                   For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; (or “GRACE”  …  comments mine) only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or EXCUSE [FOR SELFISHNESS], but through love you should serve one another.

There are instructions in the Old Testament that were peculiar to the age in which they were recorded, or the “CONTEXT”, but today people choose to dismiss them, excusing themselves for their convenience sake, or because they misunderstand the obligations of grace, and consequently will suffer the consequences. The insight of Matthew also escapes their attention as it is inconvenient. Dismiss the “INTENT” to your peril!!!!

Matthew 5:18                                    For truly I tell you, until the sky and earth pass away and perish, NOT ONE SMALLEST LETTER NOR ONE LITTLE HOOK [IDENTIFYING CERTAIN HEBREW LETTERS] WILL PASS FROM THE LAW UNTIL ALL THINGS [IT FORESHADOWS] ARE ACCOMPLISHED.

But there needs to be a guard so that the patronising pronouncements of persuasive men who would seek to make the gospel more comfortable by eliminating or distorting the “INTENT”,  or by using Bible translations that are in keeping with modern language, who evident the abject failure to carry out their study in accordance with 2 Timothy 2:15(B), “CORRECTLY ANALYSING AND ACCURATELY DIVIDING [RIGHTLY HANDLING AND SKILFULLY TEACHING] THE WORD OF TRUTH”.

This safeguard is found in the practice of ensuring that the text employed is not used in isolation. The Bible reinforces itself from cover to cover to those who will studiously explore the “INTENT” and include those confirmations that express the same truth, maybe from different scribes, from different times, in different terms, but always promoting the sovereignty of God and the underlying ambition of Father for us, as recorded in Old Testament “CONTEXT” but absolutely imperative for our success today as we embrace the “INTENT”.

We cannot be too vigilant in our proof of what is being preached, blogged, “shared’ for the Word declares that there are those who would choose to mislead and there are those who would choose to be misled. Both the New Testament and the Old Testament reinforce this principle.

2 Timothy 4:3-4                                For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,  And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions.

Isaiah 30:9-10                                    For this is a rebellious people, faithless and lying sons, children who will not hear the law and instruction of the Lord;  Who [virtually] say to the seers [by their conduct], See not! and to the prophets, Prophesy not to us what is right! SPEAK TO US SMOOTH THINGS, PROPHESY DECEITFUL ILLUSIONS.

PSALM 119:11  YOUR WORD HAVE I LAID UP IN MY HEART, THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST YOU.
